The (admittedly narrower) Pirelli 18" tyres on OZ wheels in Formula 2 look great. :)

Shame about the wheel covers that will be mandatory in F1, but they will serve an important aerodynamic purpose. =D>

why do FIA limit them to these maximum sizes?

I don't know if this has been posted, but the larger wheel diameter will allow better location of the upper A-arm attachment to the upright; maybe we will start seeing more normal upper arm angles leading to better camber control. From photos I've seen, right now the teams are going through contortions to raise the upper mounting point. This could lead to better slow speed handling.

The A-arm angle on that F2 car certainly looks better.

IIRC the upright is a spec part

EDIT: The wheel hub and the drum winglets are prescribed parts but the upright is not. However the upright cannot protrude inside the wheels inner face which I believe means the top ball joint must be inside the brake drum.

Iirc, the FIA don’t want braking distances to become even shorter than they already are as it would make overtaking even harder.

Here's the 2019 Mercedes; the upper A-arm upright mount certainly doesn't stay inside the wheel. Did they change the rules for 2020?

Edit: I must be an idiot, can't figure out how to post pictures!

I don't think that's a rule.

Most road car upper A-arms are mounted like this, well above the wheel:

I agree, there is no such rule. I was replying to this comment;

A puncture/delamination has occurred for the front-left 18" Pirelli in F2 during the 70th Anniversary GP F2 sprint race. Just like the puncture/delamination on the 13" Pirellis in the F1 race on the weekend prior.

That's concerning! :wtf:

It doesn't seem like the 18" tyre construction has any more robustness than the 13"?

The wire wheels they've got as the "here's the tyres we're running this race" look much better. I vote for them. =D>

Not the low profile, "painted on", look that some were hoping for. Just looks like a standard road car tyre really. Meh.
