Does it really matter? The new Ilmor is lead by Illien again, so any independent work done by Illien would surely still use the Ilmor resources

The engine as it is now is all Renault. Whatever Mario Illien contributes will be seen next year.

you right , it's Illmor , in 2015 Illien had input that renault refused to use , today their deal is to add 20 % illmor dynos to Viry and AVL , nothing more!

Wrong as usual!

Renault chief technical officer Bob Bell, who is overseeing both the chassis and engine programmes, said Ilmor's resources are as important as its brainpower in the relationship.

Yup. Ilmor. It's not just Mario Illien, and not just facilities.

From the things Bob Bell said in the interview, it's also help on how to actually structure the engine development organisation, in recognition that the current structure wasn't working as well as some of the competition (so, not just "the motor isn't the best, fix the motor", but also "the team that built the motor isn't the best, fix the team").

Read the article from february. bob bell confirms that illmor is just another consultant. It is still Renault DNA in there. The prototype combustion Mario had made was not adopted.

Did they make their own spark jet ignition system?

Mario is involved since 12/2015. Even the first PU iteration in 2016 already had his input. This are his own words!

Would it be possible Mario Illien was more or less hired by RedBull to give an expert view how bad the Renault engine was and what future developments would bring? (In other words: was and how dead was the horse) to make a balenced decision whether or not to continue with Renault.
