99% sure they will be free to TR with an option to buy the team in the future.
Honda now gets to save good cash for developement

Yep
Looks like TR wanted the PU free and the same deal McLaren has......a ton of cash.
Also I heard there was a Gear-Box supply problem.Just too late in the year for TR to switch to Honda unless they got McLaren Gear-Box.

How can any sane person go and say "we want free engines and $100m/year".

As per your own quote, the problem must have been elsewhere (Not cash related), since Honda was keen to give their PUs free to TR. So that leaves us with "evil-bad-mouthed-Mclaren" to blame?...Nahhh never bought this whole TR thing.
Reality bites, and I dont expect any F1 team looking to be powered by an Honda PU until they get their act together. Its as simple as that mate. Honda has only itself to blame for the state of where their current F1 reputation is; not Mclaren stating the obvious, mind you, after waiting patiently for 2 years.
Lets just hope the next batch of upgrades deliver.
Sorry for derailing the thread, now lets go back to PU talks before the Williams-Honda rumors hit the shelves!

OviJohn, free PUs are pittance if TR wanted millions on top of it; so it very well could've been cash-related.

It might be wishful thinking but don't think it's insane. Someone's just inquiring to see how desperate Honda is to find a 2nd ride... Obviously not that desperate.

I find it sort of stupid that asking for "free engines and $100m a year" is being described as insane, since that's precisely what McLaren did, and were successfully supplied with that.
Honda want at least 2nd team for a few reasons. RBR and STR would ultimately (once the PU is competitive) be an interesting fit for this. It's not unreasonable to start with the junior Redbull team, whose mission is to develop driver skills rather than to fight for championships.

Its hard to believe that so late in the season these talks were seriously about engine supply in 2018.
From TR side I think it was just to check what deal they can receive, evaluating with 2019/2020 in sight for "real" switch
i can see TR getting Honda deal for 2019, so RB will have inside info before engine changing in 2020

So If I'm Dietrich......I walk into that meeting and I say ... You want 4 cars ...I have 4 cars ..I want the mcLaren deal. Drop McLaren, they can go to Renault.
It's good buisness
You're only stupid or insane if you don't ask.

It's only good business if the engine works from the start.

No I think Dietrich would ask himself why on Earth he would want the worst engine just for a "works deal". Hell even McLaren don't want it.

Pretty soon RB will be stuck with the worst engine on the grid.

Yeah I know... that's why I hope they switch to Honda.
