If we compare best McLaren sectors 1 and 2 from today qualification to Red Bull best 1 and 2 sectors, we will see that in sector 1 (most chassis demanding) McLaren is down 0.5 sec to Red Bull, and in sector 2 (most power demanding) McLaren is down 0.7 sec to Red Bull. If these 0.7 sec are pure Honda deficit, this means, that McLaren chassis can compensate only 0.2 sec in sector 1. Based on this, I highly doubt that McLaren can get close to Red Bull next year. Today's hydraulic failure doesn't mean nothing.
in S1 diff is 0.4 or 1.3%
and in S2 its 0.6, but S2 is 30% longer so diff is 1.5%. Its at error's margin

On channel 4 during Fp1 I could no recall the commentator but he was saying that Tororosso were really happy as the size of Honda engine and package was one of the reasons why Mclaren could develop a good chasis.

Honda will never run 'Spec 4', not this year, not next year. Current engine will be platform from which they develop onto next year.
source?

Keep Alonso out of points and Honda saves money. And now that they are divorce,Honda doesn't have too rush Spec 4.
It's all about fixing all the little fires now to make the PU now more reliable and better the ERS mapping.

Honda is 100% now working for 2018 and STR.

This is the stupidest thing I've read on this forum. And that is saying something.

If Honda didn't swap in a spec 4.0 engine at Suzuka thne it's because it's not ready. Plain and simple.
The penalty at home excuse was gone at that point.

WHY? Alonso makes more money with every point he scores. So he scores no points, there is more money from the F1 budget to use on the PU.

Maybe true but Honda needs to get its act together next year and have a powerful engine too. Hopefully there is a Spec 4.0 debut next race and we get to see Honda closer to other engine manufacturers.

Red Bull with a good chassis is about 1 sec behind Mercedes while McLaren with a good chassis is about 1 sec further behind Red Bull. Spec 4 will show how closer they get to Renault. If they manage to bridge the gap, 2018 could be a better year for Honda with Torro Rosso

No he doesnt, his salary already include all bonuses.

There is no sense in that, Spec 4 is not ready, they need the track data even if they were focusing in TR already..

In what way does this save Honda money please? I don't understand.
It means a new engine will be needed, which is not free.

Maybe there is no spec 4 that is approved to even leave Sakura's gates.

Alonso has performance bonuses on his contract(points, wins and being crown world champ)
