I would not trust Charlie, it seems he's no idea of the rules.

For example:
AMuS: Die Regeln erlauben maximal acht Gänge. Darf man auch mit sieben fahren?
Whiting: Das wäre kein Problem.

Translation:
AMuS: The rules allow a maximum of 8 gears. Can you run the car with seven gears, too?
Whiting: That would be OK.

The rules say:
"9.6.1 The number of forward gear ratios must be 8."

I thought Charlie was one who had to know the regulations as good as possible.

Just don't underestimate him either - the gears must be there, but you don't have to use them. There is a bit lost in translation here, since that statement could also mean "Are you allowed to drive with seven?" I wish AMS would print their interviews in the original language, since they lean themselves out the window so often.

apparently not. The "Caterham" has a single central pylon. As far as I know thats not legal.
And the 'vanity panel'/higher nose is illegal because too high ; )

I would be surprised If he actually wouldn't be aware of such a basic rule. So I guess he knows what he is talking about ;)
But if the three examples are actually legal then I'm pretty sure we will see such solutions in Australia.

Well he seems not to be aware of this article
But I might be wrong

Code: Select all

3.7.9 No bodywork situated forward of the line A-A referred to Drawing 5 may extend above a diagonal line from a point on A-A and 625mm above the reference plane to a point 50mm rearward of the forward-most point of the impact absorbing structure defined in Article 15.4.3 and 300mm above the reference plane. No bodywork situated forward of the forward-most point of this diagonal line may be more than 300mm above the reference plane.
With the exception of a transparent windscreen, antenna or pitot tubes, no bodywork situated between the line A-A referred to in Drawing 5 and the secondary roll structure may lie more than 625mm above the reference plane.
2014 F1 Technical Regulations 12/88 9 December 2013
© 2013 Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile
Any bodywork situated above the impact absorbing structure defined by Article 15.4.3 or above the survival cell, and forward of the line B-B, must be of prescribed laminate, details of this laminate may be found in the Appendix to the Technical Regulations.
If I understand it well, Vanity panel must remain below this blue line if your car's nose has this design : P

What i notice about the williams and what other cars might do, is that the wing pylons will be used as turning vanes to fill out that area behind the crash structure.
It's a nice looking car actually. It's not so bad. Kind of reminds me of the illegal nose i drew, only without the concaved sides, but they are basically using the principle of getting flow around the sides of the shnozz.

Everything we have seen compared to when it comes to race day in first race will be completely overhauled, I expect a couple of team's to have had that eureka moment and then the other team's will race to copy it.

Would it be a advantage to posititon the engine air intake behind the drivers helmet and use the roll hoop intake for cooling or reduce it a minimum. Because the rules say this inlets must be visible in their entirety when viewed from the front of the car and without the driver seated in the car.
