Would it be technically legal not to have any sidepod inlet at all?
All cooling would have be central or at least with a central intake and the results might be horrible, but the regs do not force an actual front facing opening in the sidepods, do they?
Is there an volume defined for the opening where there would be scope for aero widgets?
Maybe on one side only?
Now that is an interesting idea!!
I wonder whether the very bulbous Alpine engine cover is a part of such a scheme??
No. They have a relatively classic cooling. The rollhoop became enormous for other reasons.

I think the Alpine like engine cover might be copied. It makes some sense to move some cooling to the centreline. There are some other reasons - like a new minimum spec volume for the fuel cell (not described actually in the rules but available to teams as CAD) which may mean the chassis' are wider (no more I shapes like Mercedes pioneered) which would make moving the cooling up is advantageous to keep narrow sidepods.
There are rules about where openings can be and minimum radii rules, so there has to be some sort of sidepod to shroud the side impact tubes.

Half a second slower by season’s start… And that is year 0! We typically see a 2 second improvement in the first year of any regulation set, and about 1 second the year after, don’t we?

That seems optimistic.
Also, the new rule set is going to allow the FIA to tweak things to make things more competitive, so it's going to be a moving target. I don't think they're going to get what they want out of the box.

This is the part that irritates me. I disliked Bernie, but I hate Liberty, and I'm an American. Stop messing with stuff just let the teams compete and be done with it.

The problem, as always, is that the competitors cannot be trusted.
There MUST be a referee.

"tweak things to make things more competitive" is not the teams doing something dirty, its Liberty & the FIA, trying to manipulate the sport for monetary gain!

F1 at the end of the day is an entertainment business. I may not like it, but that’s reality.

A better product sells better, and they own it.
I guess you could buy it and do what you would like instead?

If i owned it, the rules wouldn't be nearly a strict as they are now. It would be about racing and car development, not a show!

It would be a dead series. No offense.

Interestingly, Symonds says the Lift/Drag ratio of the 2022 cars will be similar to today, that means DF level will increase, because drag should increase too in 2022. And if the cars will remain as fast, as he says, then DF will increase a lot...

It will be interesting to see how they perform at scale.
I know a PhD aerodynamicists for an aerospace firm that told me they and others have had to go back to the drawing board many times, despite years of CFD and wind tunnel time, and with budgets / talent beyond the F1 paddock.
I'm hopeful, but skeptical.

I hope they all screw it up, and we have a 10 team winning season, with frantic updates through the campaign with the WCC and WDC being a 5 way fight at the final race.
Sadly, there is too much lead time for such a beautiful season to unfold...
