had a miss at the the 31 sec mark but yes crisp at the cemetery

I think maybe you are hearing an artifact of the sound recording, due to the esses/wall, rather than a miss..

Anyone who hasn't stood near the start line for top fuel has missed a lot.
When it vibrates your whole body, especially your insides it a hellacious feeling. Did you know that it registers on a seismograph?

I doubt it strad, use was made of 'overrev' capability when needed,
plus 2Ts tend to 'sign-off' power-wise themselves, & have no valves to hit pistons.

The square 4 RG 500 does have its carbs mounted on the sides, facing out, so
I think it most likely to have been an aural artifact, as noted earlier.

Its a deep viscera-penetrating, chest-rattling vibe, very intense.

If you've felt a big lion's roar real close-up, he gives you an oddly similar visceral feeling.

So - it must be infra-sound effect, I'm guessing - certainly enough to make you reflexively jump,
- if you are not already braced for it.

(Oddly enough the 'breath' odour of both T-F engines and the lion, blasted at you, are eye-watering, too!)

re RG500, having worked near Mike Sinclair many a time (different team) when he was spannering Randy Mamola's RG, the plugs would be out and checked and using the ear, nose and throat specialists gizmo (pre borescope days) the crown would be inspected thoroughly and if not conclusive the heads would be off (5 minutes tops), I guarantee.
Mike was absolutely first class operator, i posted in here and got backside kicked (for racial something or other) about Mike finding the reason the RG's were blowing up being the main bearings clearance too much and the relevant factory engineers getting very angry at the "suggestion": Mike replaced them with tighter clearance mains and problem solved.
There were no rev limiters.

Very astute observation.
Not a lot of people have heard a male lions full on roar. I can be heard for miles.
Most have only heard a mild version from the poor caged animals in a zoo.
