I downloaded FF3 beta some weeks ago. It's faster, it has a new downloader and an improved checker for plugins, also a password manager. When I downloaded it, GreaseMonkey, Firebug and TabMix did not work. It seems GM and TabMix work now, I haven't checked. Of my plugins (8 in total) only 2 did not work.

It's faster, but still (it seems to me) a tad slower than Opera. This are my informal times (with some applications opened):

Open
FF 5 seconds, Opera 9.5 3 seconds, IE7 2 seconds
Open NewYorkTimes page
FF 35, Opera 31, IE 40
Reopen NewYorkTimes
FF 4, Opera 8, IE 20

Still lacks an integrated bittorrent manager, IRC, text to voice translator, integrated contact list or mail (you can get them separatedly). I'll download it tomorrow, but I plan to stick with Opera.

NOTE: I don't know why after a bright start, now FF takes half a minute to open (with more apps already opened: Excel, Opera, Word, Adobe and a game). The AccuWeather thingie is not working either. It's still fast for reloading a cached page.

With java installed it works just fine. I'm running FF3 with ubuntu 8.04 64-bit.

I'm still running 7.04 and I make it work by installing sun-java6-plugin
Which will install sun's JRE, binary, plugin, the lot. And uninstalls blackdown. Avoid java-gcj like the plague!

Ciro, have you tried a blank profile? My FF3 experience improved notoriously after switching to a new profile. I'd back up my bookmarks first (never a bad thing to do), and then I'd start FF again with the -profilemanager option. Of course, this means resetting preferences and re-downloading addons, but it may be worth a try. You'll probably doubt this will work, so you may try safe mode first.

Joseff, I'd avoid java-gcj if OpenOffice weren't compiled with it... Wait! With another java installed, I can absolutely get rid of gcj! Brilliant! Now if only icedtea supported jmol...

I got my Opera updated today, btw. Looks vista-styled

Hi guys - I know this is a very old thread but it looks like the only IT thread on the forum. Im wondering if any of you learned gentlemen can propose a view on what happened with my email system this morning - the story goes:

OK heres a real weird one for you IT literates. Opened up my laptop this morning hit windows media player to stream Sydney radio - opened up Outlook Express in came a few emails most of which I deleted as it was spam (I have spam recognition with Trend Micro) so that left about 400 odd emails in the In Box. I then opened Safari web browser and checked a few sites/forums - then went back to Outlook Express to find that the 400 odd emails in the in box had completely disappeared!!!!!!!!!!!! wtf!!

This happened about 6 months ago also when I lost 1700 odd emails from the in box........

Now it wasnt operated assisted - I didnt delete anything or key the wrong tab - there was nothing in the deleted box so these emails have disappeared into thin air

I remembered and did a system restore back to Friday thinking that may bring everything back - no it didnt???

Does anyone have a clue on what might have happened and if its reversible - I know its probably a nonsense but I have a feeling Safari is mixed up with this problem........

My only saving grace is that I have replied to most of the emails so have the content of the in box in the sent box but Id still like to know wtf is going on.....

I have no idea why it happened but go to Tools --> Recover Deleted Items... to see if you can recover any of those emails.

Hi Freedom thanks for that - couldnt do it that way but a Canadian mate on GP-lounge gave me a program to recall any emails that are deleted by a corruption or accidently and it works I will just paste his instructions below - it may help some other poor IT illiterate soul

The e-mail file(s) are in the following sub-directory.

C:\Documents and Settings\<User Name>\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\ {<aplhanumerics>}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

There will be a number of .dbx files e.g. Inbox.dbx, Outbox.dbx, Deleted Items.dbx, Sent.dbx etc. The file size of Inbox.dbx should be at least 100,000 KB for 400 messages.

If you have sub-directories of your mail, they will be there also.

There is a program called dbxtract.exe. Up to version 4.5, it is free and is available at this site.

It requires the existence of the VB6 runtime dll, msvbvm60.dll. It will be in C:\windows\system32 sub-directory. If you don't have it, you can download it from Microsoft.

Basically this program will open the .dbx file and you can read the contents. I've never used it beyond looking at the files.

If the file(s) don't show anything, you are s--t out of luck.

What you should do in future is copy the Inbox.dbx file to another location on a regular basis and then if this happens again, you haven't lost anything.
