Was the steering mounted lower or was the cockpit that much taller?

not too sure about this, but the steering wheel was open at the top, more like a aircraft so that you could read the display.
In race series where it is allowed, you still see this type of display/steering wheel configuration today (Touring / GT car racing).

Gerhard Berger once drove this car on the celebration lap by sitting outside and still reaching the pedels. I guess that sort of a thing will be totally impossible with todays cockpit layout.

Form the layout od the cockpit, the driver looks to be seated more upright, similar to a go-kart
