Any chance Renault can develop a Q3 power setting similar in hp gain as Merc for 2018? Are we facing another Merc Q3 stomp --maybe Ferrari at specific tracks-- yet again...?
Does it make any sense now with a max allowance of 3 PU's and no oil burning (to the past extent)?
If Qualy mode is made at a cost of reliability, it
may be a doomed strategy for next year.
Parc fermé avoids sacrificing a PU for several short runs once it is past race-optimum milleage.

I read a news about mgu-k of 2018 pu
At Viry Chatillon they are working hard to deliberate on the power unit that will equip Renault F1 Team, Red Bull and McLaren. The French technicians are satisfied with the work on the new 6-cylinder turbo, while the MGU-K is not ok
The work at the Viry Chatillon headquarters continues at a fast pace, but according to rumors gathered in the last days, the feedback from the bench tests are not all positive for now.
The thermal unit seems to have guaranteed excellent results, already approaching now the dreaded threshold of seven race weekends (this is the limit set by technicians due to the restrictions imposed by regulation 2018): even the turbo trouble caused by the vibrations seem definitively resolved, but according to rumors to create problems of sealing would be the MGU-K units with difficulty in the lubrication necessary for cooling
The distance programmed on the test benches is more than 7,000 kilometers, or the distance that is normally traveled to resolve the seven races, but it is above all the hybrid part that worries the French technicians.
The three months that are missing at the start of the 2018 World Championship are a period of time that can bode well in the possibility of solving all the unexpected events, but there is a bit of pressure.

Why would they still be struggling with this after four years? And 8 or 9 years of K development.

I have doubt about this news
Most reliable unit of Renault was Mgu-k in 2017.
Almost all Renault powered cars used only 3 MGU-K units in 2017

Thats the 8kg-over-weight 2016 MGUK you're talking about. The 2017 unit was an utter failure and as far as I know never raced.

Yes, as far as i remember they tried the 2017 version again in the post Hungary-test, but unfortunately failed again.

IIRC Renault had to revert to the 2016 MGU-K.

This is correct. They had to revert to the 2016 MGU-K using parts machined by Red Bull to interface it to the 2017 engine.

Really?? Why were they machined by Red Bull and not by Renault?

yes beginning of the season Renault used 2016 MGU-K but Abitebeol said that 2017 MGU-K will use Russian GP.
https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/12880 ... russian-gp
I am not sure Renault could use 2017 MGU-K after Russian or following gp.
There was not clear comment abou MGU-K version

Could it be that Renault Pu is already at Ferrari level, but MGU-K is the differentiator?

It sounds like the MGUK is more of a weight issue and not a power one.
