The use of 2012 tires post Hungary while unofficial is all over twitter this morning from relaible sources (BBC, The Telegraph, etc.) Germany GP will use Kevlar belted 2013 tires trialed in Canada, 2012 Hungary and after.

As far as assumptions on how other teams will be affected, its not much of an assumption. Red Bull have been asking to go back to 2012 tires all year, and now they are getting their wish. More durable tires will clearly help Red Bull and Mercedes, and hinder Ferrari and Lotus.

Does this mean a team like lets say Mclaren could actually become more competetive ? Seeing as the whole aero of the back tire with the diffuser was issues for them.

A big question now is which tires will be used for the mid July Young/Old Driver/tires test? It better be the he ones that will appear in Hungary.

I would assume back to back stress testing with both types to get a clear view that things are moving towards a safer tire.

I can't see how the 2014 engines will make such a difference, all the tires feel is the wheel-torque at acceleration and the compounded power is not likely to change much, braking loads are likely to be four times as much both now and then anyway?

Or perhaps not, the peak braking power is likely to be at high speed, while the propulsion force peaks at low speed?

I need to elaborate a little on this for a while.

There will be a different power curve etc, so pirelli is going harder and wider to make it easier on teams with all the other changes.

They should go with a much lower profile as well if you ask me, in order to get suspension back to the chassis.

Maybe ....but the 2012 tires are a different shape, react differently under braking/acceleration(walls have different characteristics) and are lighter...so it will not effect the car aerodynamics equally and they will effect the cars balance. It isn't as straight forward as creating 2013 tire with 2012 heat range.

There is a certain amount of a rolling the dice in it.

Stiffer. The 2013 sidewall is softer than the 2012 sidewall.

Exactly my saying. It is probably not very sensible for 2014 but should be on the agenda for 2015 latest.

Indeed, watching an MP4-28 during braking with its flexing tires is outright painful for a racing-fan and mechanical engineer.

When they do these super slowmos through chicanes you can see how much the tyres deform and get stressed. I was actually wondering if they have done something similar in high speed sections to discover how much and what kind of deformation they actually had.
