After Qualifying, drivers concerns were raised, and the race even occurring was in question. Patrick Carpentier went to the medical facility to have his wrist checked. He had suffered an accident at Long Beach and was worried about the G-Forces his wrist was being put through. When asked why he was concerned about his G-Load, he told doctors that he was not able to walk straight for 4 minutes after getting out of his car. CART then organized a private drivers meeting away from the media, and asked drivers if they had experienced these symptoms. 21 out of the 25 drivers in the meeting admitted they had experienced this. Most claimed they had experienced disorientation, inner ear, and vision problems after 10 Laps on track. At least half of the drivers claimed that after 10 Laps they had no peripheral vision and reaction time was increased by up to a full second. Soon after the end of this meeting, Dr. Olvey contacted Dr. Richard Jennings at the University of Texas. Dr. Jennings told him that these conditions are only experienced if the human body experiences over 5.5G’s of force. Jennings also told Olvey that the human body cannot withstand these forces for more than 7 Minutes at a time without losing consciousness and that the race could not be safely run at more than 225mph (362kph). That night, CART officials shut there doors and tried to devise a plan.

conflation danger ! - different factors (blood oxygen and inner ear effects) being jumbled

(a) 5.5 g laterally ie what F1 has approached briefly
(b) 5.5 g driver-vertically sustained ie what aviation does
(c) some 5.5 g vector combination of lateral and vertical

the inner ear is not a balance cell (like an absolute encoder)
it resets its frame of reference every 5 seconds (like an incremental encoder)
ie after 5 seconds your perception of an out-of-balance state will replace itself with a perception of an in-balance state
but training can fix this

Similar to F1, ~1.2m. Using the Indycar rulebook requires a bit of maths and some guestimates.

The car is 201.7" (5123mm) long and the wheelbase is between 117.5-121.5" (2984-3086mm), so front and rear overhangs combined are 80.2-84.2" (2037-2139mm). The TE of the rear wing mainplane (RWMP) is 161.96-162.06" (4114-4116mm) behind the "O-line" which I assume is the front of the chassis? The "O-line" to the TE of the FWMP is 13.675-13.775" (347.3-349.9mm) so that would seem to checkout using the pic below, and would mean the nose cone is ~750mm long - which it is. Eyeing it, the trailing edge of the RWEP are ~800mm behind the rear axle line, so the front overhang must be ~1.2m. The tip of the nose isn't quite 2x the nosebox length from the front axle line, so that also seems to confirm ~1.2m!!

Good effort Will Power, for being the 1st Aussie driver to crack an Indy 500 win.. at long last..
& on the same day as his F1 compatriot, Dan Ricciardo - finally scored his 1st Monaco G.P. - win..

But sadly.. no milk 'shoey' - on the podium - from W.P., though..

I just read the driver was the VP of GM??? Isn't the safety car driver a (ex)professional??? Or is it just for the warmup laps???

Usually it is, Oriol Servia was on hand (and drove the backup car), i guess nobody wanted to tell the guy responsible for making half the engines on the grid off

I guess it doesn't mean he's not a racing driver as well... but according to wikepedia he is not - however there's a quote from him that he's done it many times before.

Maybe I'm a bit F1/Euro -centric but it feels preposterous to let an amateur anywhere near a live race track.
