Just means the whole voting concept is even more useless. You're telling people not to use it.

Just remove it already?

The whole system promotes quantity over quality
I think You are very wrong here. Look at Stefan who provide us great quality pictures his rating is the highest I think mainly by that: quality

I have ~300 posts since the voting system started, 119 upvotes and apparently no downvotes at all. This must mean something.

You have lots of friends!

Just jesting.....I've up-voted you a few times because you post quality. Not meandering rubbish which can so often clog up Forum.
There is a lesson in that for everyone.

Another problem. Deleted posts still retain the votes. So if someone posts something off-topic, gets +10 for it, but then it get's deleted, they keep the +10.

Was the voting system already in when you joined?

I post a lot less than I used to. It's depressing to post here nowadays, you just get shot down by the driver fan boys. Or the arm chair experts who are adamant anything you suggest is wrong, and don't understand how debates and discussions work.

One annoying trend is the "spotting" of ducts and holes that are almost always purposed for feeding or blowing the diffuser

The whole thing is juvenile. You do realize that there are contributors here that behave like Sheldon from the "Big Bang Theory. Don't get me wrong, I love nerds. I am a nerd, and I spend my spare time learning about race car aerodynamics. But for goodness sake, every conversation does not have to be a peer reviewed discourse.

No it's not. Inappropriate votes are deleted before post removal.
Downvotes usually aren't as they are obviously correct if the post requires removal.

I agree with both comments. I am the administrator of a small discussion board and we strive to increase our membership and encourage a full range of input, even from those we disagree with. F1T is exponentially larger that my little corner of the digisphere and so perhaps encouraging new members and the clash of competing ideas is not such a priority here. But in my experience, you look around one day and wonder where this member or that member has gone and why they don't post any more. One never knows why a member drifts away, but it is prudent in the long run to avoid any structural issues that promote such disappearances.

I'm probably shooting myself in the foot with this, but 2 days ago one of my posts got removed (too many sexual oriented jokes from everybody concerning the noses and Richard decided to delete a lot of them), but I still have the votes for it.

Dunno what you exactly mean with inappropriate votes, but I get out of it that the moderators decide on a case by case base if the votes are retained or not?

IMO, the system in general works well. Yesterday I have been massively busy in the mercedes w05 topic, and I did received quite some upvotes for technical information only. I don't do any of that for upvotes, but it is motivating that people appreciate what you bring to the table. I don't think it's juvenile at all. Is a pat on the back juvenile? Is a thumbs up from your employee juvenile? It's just a token of respect and appreciation.

Its a manual process to delete votes. I was on tapatalk and realised that 17 posts of innuendo was a bit too much for the car thread so got rid of them. However tapatalk doesn't show the votes so I didn't spot that you'd got votes for those posts. So its human error on my part.

I actually like seeing if the thoughts & facts that I add to the forum are appreciated, which also brings a question with it: since I enjoy being an armchair analyst with a relatively good education in automotive technology, I see this forum as a place to gain knowledge and have fun. But what I have seen has been interesting - some people give a +1 for a topic, and someone else comes along and downvotes it. Is that the intent? If someone thinks that a comment isn't worthy of an upvote to simply downvote it? It was stated before that only content that was false or "destructive for the discussion" (can't think of a better way to state that right now) should be downvoted, but in this case someone else's opinion is being demoted.
Otherwise I see the rating system as a valuable addition to the forum - keep up the great work!

Which is where the downvotes come in handy. Sadly, this has another downside. I have seen a "Who downvoted me!!!1!!1111!!" come by a few times.
One annoying trend is the "spotting" of ducts and holes that are almost always purposed for feeding or blowing the diffuser
Agreed, it is annoying, but also a part of gaining members. More and more members join, and not everyone is as knowledgable. Giving a suggestion is no problem if you ask me, the problem here is that people continue the same thing over and over again, where we will go over the same discussion again and again explaining why that won't help, which most of them will never even read.

Well, seeing how trolls have become more and more common here and people keep repeating the same stuff for millions of times, then yes, it does need to be reviewed.

No one here has a problem with you disagreeing with me, and the rating system shouldn't be used to show an agreement. It's point is to show quality content and hide the bad content. Bad content can come in various ways, but a disagreement shouldn't be related to a downvote.

Sadly enough, the rating system isn't used on quality, but more and more by agreeing or disagreeing with someone, which destroys the whole point of the rating system. This has gotten worse and worse over time as more people gained ability to vote. It's only good use now is to make posts by fanboys hidden, but even that is for one post and (although I cannot confirm this) it seems like they'll get a rather long free reign before they are finally gotten rid of.

Give people a way to use a system, and they'll use it wrong.

So here's an example, it's now clear that is post was "wrong":-
http://www.f1technical.net/forum/viewto ... 70#p480570

On that basis, should this be downvoted?

What is under discussion is the difference between theory and reality.

This is the theory and it supports a laudable goal:
Steven wrote:

This is the reality:
Sadly enough, the rating system isn't used on quality, but more and more by agreeing or disagreeing with someone, which destroys the whole point of the rating system.
If the latter is true, then the system is not accomplishing its stated purpose. What to do about that is for someone above my pay grade to decide.
