But with the way F1 is continuing you could probably just use the wet weather engine map setting as a pass mode seeing as when there is more than a few drops of water on the track :D

My solution to using the ERS to ramp up power to its maximum for an overtake would be to look at the DRS activation.

The DRS Activation is a couple of corners before the DRS straight. This would give the mapping ecu ample time to adjust the power distribution of the ERS to give full power from the ERS out of the corner exit onto the coming DRS straight.

The car's ECU at the very least is notified when DRS is available (to allow the driver to use DRS), so this information should be accessible for the ECU and powerplant mappings.

The only question is would it be legal. Nothing i have read says it isnt.

Different power unit mappings are allowed.
So a mapping which will allow full power at max torque demand will be what it takes for overtaking. I do not think it's too difficult for a driver to change the map in circuit points where he'll plan to do the overtake.

Coupling it to DRS doesn't seem a good idea to me:
1. DRS isn't allowed in every place an attempt to overtake is possible
2. DRS is activated when lapping a backmarker too, but maybe you don't want to demand full power from the power unit.
3. If you're in a bulk, maybe you want to stay behind another car in order to save fuel. DRS is welcome, but not a map that will deliver full power.

These reasons are the ones which convince me that any of the teams will attempt this, even if it is "legal" in some way. It might just compromise the team's fuel strategy as it might activate ERS at unwanted parts of the track.

how are you guys thinking they skirt this rule:
5.5.3 You can only have 1 ERS pedal map per type of tyres as per the rules.
