Maybe the Old Boys engine could not be fitted in the McLaren car due to different parts at new places so the dimensions is wrong. The 2017 engine will probably be based on that one. Where does that leave the 2016 engine when it comes to upgrades?
I think the engine you refere to will be modyfied so that it could be fited by race 11 or 12 this year.....or so i hear. ;)
@goranf1 What's your source?????

After the issue of a hydraulic leak on the previous day, the team decided – as a precaution – to replace the power unit overnight. After three laps, the data flagged a coolant leak. It was the start of a frustrating day for Alonso, cutting short his track time, but it hasn’t dampened the team's spirit. Testing has enabled a sizeable amount of valuable integration, evaluation and correlation of our new package’s components. ERS deployment has been improved and we know much more about the balance between the power unit and the chassis.

It could mean that, they now know more about the proportion of lap time contributed by engine power and chassis.

Can't be accurate. The gulf between 900 and 950 peak horsepower would not be so noticeable on track due to the nature of the engines. Common sense says Renault hasn't cracked 900hp yet because that would mean they have finally solved 90% of the issues, and they haven't!

Yeah...these numbers mean nothing 2 me. Only numbers that I understand are lap time.

I would say that it means that they slightly compromised on some of the packaging to increase PU performance. But, I know jack sh!t, so take that for what it's worth.

Tbh we won't really know the relative performance of the Honda PU against the others until the first race when the gloves are off. No point being overly pessimistic at this stage, as testing is just that testing - Working on aero, tyres, finding reliability issues - work on fixes and testing various different maps for the PU and maybe new fuel mixtures and lubricants.
I expect if Honda do bring updates at race 11, the first 10 races will likely be tough.

You just have to be pragmatic and accept that it will take Honda a while to catch up and keep expectations on the low side.

In Renault v6 forum speed of cars through sector lines is published & Mclaren has 6th & 4th fastest speed through 1st & 2nd sectors and if u compare their speed to 2015 qualifying u will see a considerable improvement while their current top speed even doesn't match first Barcelona test in 2015 so they have improved but they don't push the engine in the main straight line to save engine and gain data.

And they do, but as you probably know, no simulation tool can replace real world testing

Specially when past season your simulation tools proved to be unreliable :wink:

Honda's biggest mistake is not testing the engine outside an F1 car.

While there are several legal ways of doing it, I dont think Honda and Mclaren has done anything towards the same.

Of the top of the head, LMP 1 provides Honda and Mclaren the best way to test the engine, unlimited.

If you're in the ballpark power wise. You have a chance.
