This is the first Mercedes-Benz F-1 racing engine. It was developped for the W 196 R and used a Bosch direct injection. That engine was powerful and very efficient (2500 ccm : 256 bhp in 1954 and later 290 bhp at 8500 rpm). Note also that the eight cylinder engine was tilted to lower the CG.
1954, 2014 the history repeats itself...

Less is more I present the Scat V4
Basically a small block chevy with the center 4 holes removed and welded up.
