I have to admit that I like the 12point bolt head ..but :
you need really design the application to it = need enough acess to be able to use a socket....all conventional open spanners ...no ways to use those..and you need top class tools because of the reduced head size as well...
Inside hex and especiallycombined with countersunk head very likely to be misused by spannermans of this world...

at least the old trick with a torx bit hammered into the rounded off inside hex will usually do the trick to crack them open....
I´m a definite fan of torx .

Maybe it's time for a dedicated "I love bolts" thread.

Why? This McLaren is supposed to be quite the driver's car.

That's screwed up, autogyro. This thread is getting a little too coarse for me. In fact, this thread should be locked to prevent any more flatheaded comments.

When you refer to 12 point, which of them? I know there's a 3ple square(90 degree angles) double hex(60 degree angles, which I believe is bad for high torque) and splined one.

If this model is a V8, will they follow the norm and use a V10 or V12 for their flagship?

Not if their lightweight philosophy holds true.
I think boosting the current V8 would be a much better and cheaper option rather than develop another engine from scratch.

I very much doubt that. The current engine is a fuel optimized turbo V8. McLaren are already committed to a hybrid. I don't think they will increase the cylinder count for comfort and prestige and reduce efficiency by doing that. It is not going to improve performance or weight.
If McLaren do their own 2013 F1 engine I can see them doing an L4 in one of their road cars. That would make sense in terms of a marketing message.

What about racing? There wasn't a remotely successful forced induction car in FIA/ACO GT classes for ages. Even Nismo ditched their V6 Turbo in favour of the N/A V8 from some other Nissan for GT-R GT1.
McLaren seem to have been very serious about their GTE programme. Many see their lobby as the main reason ACO allowed carbon monocoques for 2011. A normally aspirated 3.8L V8 would have to work very hard to keep up with the opposition. Even AMR/Prodrive are thinking about replacing their 4.5L V8 by a bigger V12 in the Vantage just for durability.
