Alonso, after Malaysia, had 6 engines he was allowed to race. The one used in Bahrain Qualifying was replaced just after qualifying. This meant that that engine was no longer allowed to qualify or race. So in terms of engines he's allowed to race, he's still 6 now. But yes, it affected his overall 8. So the 4 new engines, the Melbourne engine, and the China race engine will all have to do the rest of the year for him.

If someone uses an engine in quali, and doesn't use it for the race, then that engine can't race anymore, and neither can it qualify, as per the regs. So that would have been usable only for FP purposes. But it still counts towards the 8.

Tried that last year, and it doesnt work that way.
Unless you have intimate insider knowlege, you will never know what the engine milages are. Under the 2005-2008 engine rule you will find out to about around 80-120km below what they are actually are.
F1 2010 Season Driver's Engine Count

by TunisianF1Fan
Does anyone know what the current status of each drivers engine count is?
The rules stipulate each driver can use only 8 engines per season, i think ferrari are among those who have used up the most engines till now, at least among the top runners, so most importantly, how much new engines are remaining for the redbull and mclaren drivers.
It would be good to keep a running tally in this thread
P.S : do you think used engines are re-usable? can some still have enough life for a race?

From Formula1.com:
"Should they and their fans be worried? Probably not - used units are routinely brought back into service, especially when a circuit is not considered too demanding. But that’s not to say that fresh engines aren’t worth their weight in gold. They are. Not only are they likely to have slightly more power, their drivers will also feel they can push them that little bit harder."

It's an interesting little aside that Massa is, I think, the only driver not to retire from a race this season. I wonder if the fact that his "engine pool" will be higher mileage than others will cause him a problem towards the end of the season.
For example, Hamilton's Monza engine (a new one for the race) is effectively unused which might be useful (as is the fact that Webber has only used 6 engines compared to most drivers' use of 7). Indeed, Hamilton and Webber effectively have an engine advantage over the other three front runners with Webber's being a slight further advantage over Hamilton's. Much like the points table really.
true position on unused engines

lots of chat about how many new engines the various drivers drivers for the remaining races ; we see the figures quoted but what is the reality , personally I have lost track eg
button used an engine for 1 lap at monaco [ apparently without damage ] ; does this count as used or not ? does he , in reality , have 2 new engines still ? or is it a once used engine , or twice or what ????
similarly hamilton didn't get far at monza ; what does that engine count as ? was it new for the race ?
has anyone done an analysis of the true position on engine usage , how many engines have completed 1 race , how many 2 etc , factoring in the only 1 lap scenario mentioned above

Seems to be a popular topic around the boards today. This is the best info on engine use that I know of...

I get the feeling the activity on this topic is due to the formula1.com post.
I have yet to run across any statistics about how many laps are on any of the engines.
I'm a bit ignorant on the rules regarding this, but you've got to figure that they can use an older/high mileage mill for practices and swap that engine out for a 'race' engine with lower mileage on it for race longevity.
Could you use your Monaco engine for Monza practice and then swap out for Monza qualifying/race? Maybe i'm totally wrong.
I think once you figure out how many miles are on the powerplants you might get a more accurate gauge of where the teams lie.

The rules are a bit strange. If you change an engine during an event, meaning practice 3 through the race, then you can only use that engine again at the last race, or for practice.
Otherwise, you can swap engines around as you please, provided you keep to the allotted eight. For example, Vettel alternated between his Spa and Monza engines last year to finish up the season. You can use anything you want, of course, in P1 & P2.
The gearbox rule is completely different, in that you have to use the same unit for four consecutive races, incurring a penalty each time you change it.
If one were really interested, the data below could be cross referenced with the number of laps run in P3, qualifying and the race. I imagine it's safe to assume that race engines aren't used at all in P1 & P2 with the exception of engine no. 1.
Judging from last year, the teams tend to use up the engines consecutively. I believe Vettel was the only one to go back to an older engine. That may change this year with the extra races, with Ferrari the most likely candidate to do so.
