This described as "A small displacemen Flat12 by Matra", with some connection to GM, anyone who knows about this?

Ah, a 1971 F1 prototype to try out Ferraris 1970 Flat12 concept, that xplains the machined block, thanx Frogman!

Had to be a German or Italian work of art. Note the exhaust manifolds on top - 3 cylinders each for blowdown energy capture - in spite of being "log" design.

Probably not a boxer judging by the lack of stagger of the two banks.

Top xhausts is a rare bird on a Flat12, here is one less successful xample of German work of art;

I just love this thread :mrgreen:

By the way, my ICE prof was the Head of mechanical design of the M291 flat 12.. I should have a picture of a cutaway Cylinder/Head he brought somewhere, give me a minute...

The 917 flat 12 Porsche engine was not a boxer, since the opposing cylinder conrods used a common crank pin.

Is that the engine that convinced Mercedes-Benz that they need to buy Ilmor?

That could very well be, Mercedes pulled out of WSC after the 1991 season and bought Chevrolet's 25% stake in Ilmor in 1993.

At the same time as Mercedes developing the monster Flat12 for WSC, Porsche built a terrible 180 kg V12 for Arrows in F1;

Poor Jackie Oliver never recovered from that.
