It seems that that is the compressor. Split turbo.

Thanks for the video. I have bad broadcast here in spain and I had no opportunity to check this out.
No big surprises, are there? To me the most surprising thing was seeing everybody doing post-braking extensively in FP2, I guess to calculate fuel savings vs time loss and fine tune it. Some driver said fuel was not going to be a problem, I guess the guy was joking.
Many teams having problems with the brake by wire trying to go fast, also as expected.

It's a very intereting solution aero-wise.
I was thinking the same thing. Reminds me of the 80s cast manifolds used in turbo production cars. Maybe this is a sign of higher back pressure running like TC was hinting at being a possibility.

The Renault runs it's MGU-H in the V and routes it's intake over the airbox and then normal to the compressor. Not sure on the ferrari but here's a link to their up and over 3 into 1 into 1 exhaust.

So it does look like this

Magneti Marelli unviels new hardware for new 2014 rules

Italian electronic company Magneti Marelli used the paddock of Autodromo di Monza last weekend to reveal some of their new hardware destined to run the new 1600cm3, V6 turbo engines in 2014.

Magneti Marelli engineers started by showing their new ERS system -- an engine boost coming from the recovery of kinetic energy during braking associated with the energy coming from exhaust gases, both aimed at feeding the electrical motor-generators hooked up to the engine shaft).

Then, they unviled their new fuel systems (injectors and pumps for GDI engines with fuel pressure of up to 500 bar) as well as their two-way WI-FI systems for data transmission from vehicle to infrastructure (i.e., exchange of a much larger set of data and of different types of signals between machine and pit).

In their press release, Magneti Marelli writes that the technology and methods used in developing the KERS system are a source of solutions and technological spin-offs for systems and components aimed at mass-produced hybrid and electric engines (moto-generators, electronic control systems, inverters, battery control, etc.).
After seeing that turbo, this previous configuration discussed here before looks all the more possible.

I finally had the time to have a good look at all th video's + listen the the audio.. But what I noticed is that they drive it like a diesel power unit.. at least is sounds like it. Also the onboard video 's are rather quiet, can hardly hear the engine.. Or is that due the poor quality?

I think the broadcasters or FOM needs to re-calibrate their audio stream. The cars are much louder on track, think they are still are muffling the sound like in the V8 days. But nowadays with the new engine they should boost the engine sound because now they are making the experience for tv spectators really poor. If you hear the sound on the Mercedes 360 onboard video with the TV feed you can definitely hear the difference.

the sound is horrible! it's like 2 notches worse than a motogp engine.....off throttle sound is quite soothing though

Going back to the firing order discussion, one photo that, if true, would prove that "trained ears" should NOT be trusted:
Looks like cams are at 0, 90 and 270. No way to make proper 120 spacing.

Does anyone know what Ferrari are doing with their gearbox? You cannot hear any throttle blipping on downshits when your trackside.

This appears to be a camshaft from a V8 engine.

It look like a V6 cam to my eyes. A V6 would have 4 cams each with 6 lobes for the 24 valves in the engine... I can only see 6 lobes on that cam.

There is another set of lobes hidden inside the palm of one guy's hand.

I think it is because the mic is in the camera so we mostly hear the intake not much exhaust, or that everything is still tuned for the louder V8s. I'd think that with a few tweaks they could make it better, I can't believe sitting next to a 600hp engine is _that_ quiet turbo or not

It's been discussed before, apparently they use the MGU-K instead of the ICE to hit the right RPMs for the downshifts

I like that idea.
It would certainly be more fuel efficient and more precise in rpm targeting to utilize the MGU-K drive instead of throttle blips. I suppose Ferrari will be safe for the remainder of the season from being copied with regards to this technical functionality of their power unit.
