This game is really coming to its own now, isn't it? It's coming together beautifully:

When this one hase the same steering as in dirt you don't need to buy it.
Dirt and Grid have great handling attributes! Try using a controller with it instead of a keyboard, or at least split the keys like I do.
You need a wheel to really judge....The last Codie game I played with wheel on PC was I think CMR2005 or something, and it drives pretty poorly. After that I pretty much gave up on their racing title.

I'll wait til some actual racing sim oriented press to review this until I fully buy into the hype. Games like Gran Turismo or something I can somewhat tolerate its fault, but for an F1 game it needs to be at least as good in the drive vs the EA's old title...

I'm firing up the game right now. I will follow up in 30 minutes or so and say what I think as a sim racer.

My review: Decent so far.

Graphics are very impressive. Great car models, great track modelling, excellent detail, runs great on my i7-920 @ 3.2ghz with an nVidia GTS250. Most things run great on this rig though :)

Controls are quite good. I did a time trial at Bahrain with all assists off, downforce at full, and gearing at it's shortest. A Monaco setup basically. The force feedback on my Logitech momo had good feedback and a good weigh to the steering. I didn't spin on my first lap, which I found surprising with a moderate amount of pushing. I also had an understeery setup as well, but I am pretty sure with the pedal mashing I would, even in an RB6, would make me spin.

I was nowhere near a quick lap mind you, but I was faster then computer Massa :)

The menus are a little awkward, as like most codemasters games, every menu item is 'integrated' into the game. You want to change your settings, you have to leave your trailer, go to MyF1 etc.

So far I am pleased with it, and they seem to have done a good job. I hope to spend some more time in the next hours/days to talk some more about it. I am also going to try a track I know much better, like Monza, to see what I can do.

Preordering the game on Steam was a good way to go, making it in the mid $30 dollar range, and preloading it so when it became 'active' all I had to do was start it, as opposed to going to the store, buying it, bringing it home, installing it for 20 minutes, THEN playing.

Nope. Order it on Steam, and you can start playing it as soon as you can finish downloading it.

I don't have xbox live. Lame

Wish it had the Top Gear track. Maybe they'd have it as a download if we started a campaign.....

Huh?

Not sure what you mean, Steam is free and from Valve for ordering games digitally for your PC and now, Mac. You need a Windows Live Gaming account, which is free as well if you want to save games and such.

Ringo - Commercially you want the Logitech G27. It's about the best you can get at BestBuy and such.

Fanatec.de is known for great Porsche wheels for the PC and incredible pedals, but they are known to be a little behind Logitech driver-wise, and there can occasionally be some issues, but they might be resolved by now, not sure.

The G27 can also be used on a PS3, which can be an advantage to some. The G27 is about $300 USD if you look around, ant the fanatecs can be as low as $400 but can go quite high. Nobody is disappointed when they get a G27.

I have a Logitech momo, which is quite good, but has less steering range, 270deg as opposed to the 900deg lock to lock on the G27. The momo can be had for $100USD if you window shop a bit.

I do well enough with my momo, but often for very sensitive cars and corners, I wish I had better pedals and more freedom with the wheel.

In fact I will soon be selling my momo for a G27. It's a good beginner.

In between these two is the Logitech Driving Force GT which I have experience with or really and info on, other than it works on PC and PS3, and is ~$50 more than the momo.

I'll wait about 24 hours more to play it :?
I bought my PS3 two years ago because F1 license was exclusive from Sony, I hope this long wait worth it.
I have a Logitech Driving Force Pro, if the game is good enough maybe I consider to buy a newer one. :)

I consider the Logitech G27 as the best wheel and pedal combo available before you have to put down serious cash to get a boutique wheel. They can cost thousands.

Obviously, the G27 is a refinement of the fantastic G25. There are noticeable differences, however. With the G27 you have lost the option of using the shifter as a sequential shifter, you're stuck with the "H" pattern 6 speed (with reverse). If you want sequential action, you have no option but to use the paddle shifters.

The G27 has 6 buttons on the wheels, versus 2 for the G25, a great imrovement. And it also has a neat LED display to indicate RPM, just like our heros use.

Image

Now if talk about paddle shifters, 6-speed gearboxes, LED lights and such don't get you excited, it gets better.

The pedals (three, gas, clutch, and brake) are redone to allow true heel-and-toe driving. Not only that, it's easily tunable.

I've had a lot of Logitech wheels over the years, and they work great on PC's. Of course there are tons of adjustments available to tune your wheel to your preferences, and that really makes a huge difference. In fact, any serious sim racer has to set up their wheel software with as much care and attention as the car itself to realize the full potential of fun and performance.

Just got a chance to look at the game, haven't raced my 1st lap yet but looks ok and has a good polished feel to it. I like the character creation and feel of how you start your career. I hope enjoy my time at Lotus, and I believe it will be a fantastic way to challenge myself against other up and coming drivers! (For Sure!) =)

Gib - Does your AA work? I have an ATI 4870 and my AA doesn't work at all making the game full of icky crawlies.

Ringo - Wheels. (All IMHO)

Logitech DFP ~100$ US
This wheel works with PC and PS3 and is about the best bang for the buck you can get at under 100$.
Pros:
Solid and shouldn't break.
Good drivers and support.
Cons:
Gear driven so force feedback has a small dead spot and notchy feel.
No clutch

Logitech G25/27 ~200-300$ US
This is the newest series of wheels G25 and G27 are both great wheels and are smoother than their little brother the DFP. PC and PS3
Pros:
Solid build
Good drivers and support
Smooth feel, only slightly notchy and a slight deadzone
Good pedals.
Cons:
$$$

Fanatec clubsport ~320$ US
I'm trying to fight myself off this. Very nice wheel and a good price for what you are getting.PC and PS3.
Pros:
Very nice wheel, better quality than the others as far as the actual wheel itself goes.
Very smooth and no dead spot.
Awesome pedals, best this side of 700$ for pedals alone.
Quiet
Cons:
Support seems to be somewhat spotty
Cost
Drivers are not quite a mature as the Logitech's.

The Fanatec wheel is likely the best of the ones listed as far as good driving feel. I have not gotten to use it yet, but if it is as good as my old ACT Labs Force Rs (rest its soul) I really need to get it. The belt feel is much better than the gear feel IMHO.

All in all I have seen very few people who are unhappy with any of these choices.

I didn't notice the AA being off, but I think there was only antiscopic filtering available. I just select max and play.

With nVidia you can always force AA to on for a specific game profile not sure about ATI.

Yeah you usually can do that too, but I cant get any AA to work in game or forced.
Its so bad w/o any that the lines in the corners disappear entirely at the apex and it looks like a fence on both sides looking down the road.
Just ick. I'm gonna go update my drivers, its been since Feb, so maybe that will fix it.
