McMacca wrote:Ok So maybe i was too vague for some of you, what is the advantage of closing up only one of the side pods, does this suggest one side for engine cooling and one for oil etc, why not close up both sides, will this lack of symetry affect the handling of the car (obvoiusly not if Germany is anything to go by) etc.
Radiators are indeed are not symmetrical. I've seen on some older F1 pics is that one side is water and another oil+water. I think that won't affect handling much, but the drag reduction is significant.
We already know the Merc is really good with its cooling, could this lead to a dramatic design change in 09, with a car with much smaller pods than this year, maybe a more aerodynamic shape to the pods.
I doubt they would make radiator intakes much smaller, however cooling aero is developed every year and as winglets and fins are banned teams they pay more attention to the things like cooling aero and so on.

FRONT WING - FRANCE
1.A gurney tab was used for France to increase downforce
2.Two vertical fences so as to clean up the airflow beneath the profile's central section in a better way

Take a good look at the new nose of the mclaren. The front wing also features a raised middle section like the ferrari's.take a good look .

This is the old one .

looks like that front wing could benefit from ferrari's holed nose

Hmm, a 4 and a half plane wing now... (sorta like BMW's 2 and half plane last season)

Yes .don't be surprised to see mclaren developing nose with holes like Ferrari. Also since this kind of arrangement is suited for medium and high down force circuits mclaren might bring it to the last 3 races Chinese, Japnese and brazil.

I doubt they can make it - there's not much space left - Also with nose so narrow it would be hard to maintain stiffness so as to pass crash-test.

I am sure it is possible, maybe a small hole it will work good with the new wings on the nose. The new wings will make the air going over the hole more efficient, that is a problem with the one at ferrart.

I'm most interested in the appearance of the BMW style horns. I heard pretty reliably (or so I thought) that most teams were having trouble seeing the point of them. Perhaps McLaren have found them to be useful suddenly.

No pun intended eh!

It would be interesting to see the McLaren with a Ferrari-style thru-nose hole. I would be very interested in the coupling effect of the bridge wing and the top of the hole. It might actually work like a flute, and extract the air faster.
Can anyone take a guess as to what coupling the nose-hole and the bridge wing might do for downforce?
