"We've put the idea of qualifying tyres to the teams and we will get their feedback," said Hembery. "If they don't want to do it, we won't do it.
"It might be a step too far next year and too much for the teams to take on board, but it's something that we have offered."
I think with the low fuel Q sessions we run today, a special tire for Q sessions sounds very nice

What would be the point?

Help me remember, please. Why did we lose them again in the first place?

The question is; if they do really come back, will people have to start the race on the same tyres as they set their fastest Q3 time on? If yes, then no one will venture on the quali tyres.

Way to go, band-aid qually-stickies back, now free the Rpm's as well and an xtra 10cc/sec come 2014 qualification!

I assume to stop people not going out for a lap in Q3, and/or giving more opportunity for the drivers to push for a good lap once in Q3.
It seems today that people are far too concerned with the race and as a result the qualifying show is suffering.
But I still don't see the point in investing, and testing qualifying tyres. Just seems unnecessary...

Lap records

(even though only racing laps are the official records i think)

Obviously not since they will probably be made for 1.5 laps 2 max.

Qualifying tires are great in a tire war.. other than that, I see no point.
Lap records.. at the end of a weekend does it make any difference if the field qualifies on average at 1'25" vs 1'30"? I'd say no.

Paul Hembery mentioned also a while back that he didn't like the way some teams were just doing 1 run in quali to save tyres. So he wants to introduce this as a way of separating what they do in quali from the race, and make sure that pushing for more runs in quali will not hamper their race strategy/pace

Couldn't he just give them one more sets of tyres and achieve the same effect with less development and transportation cost?

I like the idea of a quali-tyre.
But they need to rewrite the rules. If there will be a quali-tyre then the teams need to be able to have a quali-setup. And that does not work if they have to use the same set-up in the race as they did in quali. So the parc-ferme rules need to be scrapped!

Would be a waste of 14 or so laps of tyre life.

And bringing 5 or 6 special sets of tyres for qualifying isn't wasteful (one or more for practice sessions, four for the four runs a top team will do in qualifying)? Or do you only bring them for a single shot at Q3? All seems a little unworkable to me.

There are quite a few of MrM's rules which should be scrapped if you ask me. Testing-ban as well as the parc ferme rules, while I believe that the engine homologization should be losened up, leaving room for at least some form of development.
