Formula One test driver Maria de Villota is conscious after sustaining what ambulance staff called “life-threatening” injuries in a collision with a team truck.

De Villota, 32, was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, England, after the accident at 9.15 a.m. local time today.

“She has been receiving the best medical attention possible at the hospital,” her Marussia team said in a statement. “Maria is conscious and medical assessments are ongoing.”

The driver was testing the team’s MR-01 racing car for the first time at Duxford Airfield near Cambridge. The car slowed after a test run and then accelerated into the truck, the British Broadcasting Corp. reported.

De Villota, a Spaniard, was treated by paramedics at the scene and taken to the hospital, East of England Ambulance Service spokesman Gary Sanderson said in an earlier statement, describing the injuries as “life threatening.”

She completed 300 kilometers (186 miles) of testing for the Lotus Renault team last year and was hired by Marussia in March. A woman driver hasn’t competed in the most-watched motor sport since 1992.

The daughter of a racing driver, De Villota has competed in series including the World Touring Car Championship since 2001, according to her website. In 2004, she drove a Ferrari Modena sports car at the 24 Hours of Daytona.

Most likely cause is pedal misapplication. The driver hits the accel when they mean to hit the brake. Common for unfamiliar drivers in two-pedal cars (cars with pedals set up for left-foot braking).

Counterintuitively, pedal misapplication is more likely to happen after you leave the track and come in to the pits/paddock/etc. than when you are running hard on the track. Your brain switches from "focused driving" mode to "normal intuitive" mode when you leave the track.

Best wishes to the driver.

Such a comment implies driver error. It is far better to await the outcome of the investigation before wild accusations are bandied around.

I hope that Maria makes a full recoery.

Listening to the audio of the crash (from outside the car) i can't hear the revs rise or fall. Which is weird the revs just stay constant until the crash. I'd have expected a blip had she accidentally stepped on the wrong pedal.

life threatening head and facial injuries... :?

Sometimes driving for a low level team is not worth it.... Freak accident, but it could have been avoided. I think that is why they don't allow cars to drive INTO the garage during an F1 weekend. You drive PARALLEL then the car is brought in by mechanics.

Hopefully the padding in her helmet minimised the wounding.

I don't see how she could have lowered her head enough (6-7 inches), even assuming that she tried to.

After hearing the audio it sounds like she hits the truck and then lift comes down to hit hers on the head as theres two impact noises, but im jumping to conclusions, just hope shes going to be ok.

Lifts like that can't raise/lower apart from the hydraulic system.

Looking at the photos, it almost looks like she had her visor open when she pulled into the pits, possibly making the whole situation that much worse.

perhaps the safety of these types of test/make shift tent garages needs further looking into. Theres lessons which can be learnt today i.e the lorries need to be parked further away etc etc. you don't see such a thing at the race track

I think something like this was bound to happen given the organization of straightline tests, with lorries and trucks standing about. Race cars are only meant to be safe in their own environment, so when you have these "alien" objects around it creates high levels of danger.

These types of accidents are so unfortunate, and yet ironic since it's the most serious accident in the modern era yet it wasn't at a GP.

What does it have to do with anything that this happened in a car built by Marussia? Nothing.

So, maybe find out the facts before making statements like that? Or is that too logical?
