Sadly, the Macau GP of this year has already had to announce to drive casualties.

Yesterday, a dreadful crash during qualifying for the Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix claimed the life of Portuguese motorcycle racer Luis Carreira today. Carreira was riding a Suzuki for the Benimoto/Rider/Cetelem team.

This morning, Macau Touring Car Cup racer Phillip Yau Wing Choi has lost his life following a crash at the circuit today. He was driving a Chevrolet Cruze for the Look Fong Racing Team and crashed at Mandarin Bend during qualifying.

The cruze crash wasn't even that violent. Back end just hit the wall. Sure it was at about 200kph but that's odd.

Smoke inhalation perhaps? there quite a lot of smoke in the car. Driver sit on left or right in Cruze? Is this the same Cruze as in WTCC or BTCC?

Brake problems? He seemed to be going quite quickly, and not slowing down much either.

I don't have more news that that, but to me it seems like a throttle stuck wide open

If your throttle gets stuck open and you're heading for a wall, is it possible or even desirable to try to quickly jump off the bike?

I don't think so.

First, IF (because we don't know yet) he had a stuck open throttle, the easiest thing to do would be to hold the clutch so the bike doesn't accelerate. Then apply the brakes. Now of course we are talking here about high speeds, stress, and no margin for error. So thinking about that might be difficult because the rider probably doesn't realize what's going on, and still tries to keep control of the machine.

Secondly, jump off the bike is probably impossible at that speed. Falling WITH the bike is possible, but who would do that on purpose I mean it is a really weird thing to think about when you are still trying to regain control of the bike.

I just think that its an unfortunate accident, that it was only down to luck if he would survive or not because there is nothing you can do here, except holding the clutch in the case of a stuck throttle but again at that speed, the time to take a decision is just too short, even for experienced riders/drivers.

Very similar crash to Ashley Cooper's fatal accident in the Clipsal 500 weekend in 2008. Such sudden side-impact results in severe internal and head injuries. Unless very heavy, smoke inhalation will take a while to cause death

In most cases with a motorbike, if you don't make the racing line then slowing down becomes a massive issue as braking that hard will either have the bike in a straight line or fold the front wheel anyway. One thing i learnt pretty quickly is that you cant lean and brake hard at the same time, the bike just naturally picks itself up and wants to go in a straight line no matter how hard you lean off the blasted thing
