Caterham CT-03 Renault

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

On the FP1 coverage at 21:40 ish

The CT-03 was going down the main straight with Kovalainen in the seat and you could see a white vortex coming off the barge board area and tucking underneath the car ,running down the side of the plank to the diffuser.

Not normally seen but the camera angle and elevation allows it.

The only time I've seen an image like that was with the previous Caterham/lotus car.

I hope somebody gets that image so people can see what we're always trying to describe.

on the video you can see the vortex swirling around .... I'm not too sure what this indicates

Is it correct...are they doing it deliberately?...

Certainly – I always thought that was meant to be one of the main goals of a barge board – to create the vortex that pulled air under the floor rather than around the side of the car. The other goal is to pull what doesn't go down under the car around the side ofc.
