F1 2014 Car Comparison Thread

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Thanks Blanchimont.
So with 71.8mm bolt to bolt, I am getting the following tailpipe diameter estimates:
Mercedes: 98.2mm
Ferrari: 124.9mm
Renault: 94.4mm

And cross sections:
Mercedes: 7534mm2
Ferrari: 12252mm2
Renault: 6999mm2

Hmmm... that's less that the allowed cross section for the Renault engines. The diameter estimate from the last of the 9 pictures is a bit larger and would come very close to the allowed cross section.

The errors in my method are potentially quite large (measuring single pixels, up to 2% error per pixel, applied 4 times over), the reflections in the bolts, etc. So I guess all one can conclude is that the Ranaults and Mercedes are very close to the inferior limit (I'd guess exactly in it), that the Ferraris are close to the largest limit with a cross section area of about 5/3 that of the competition. And that I need a better measuring method or better pictures ;-)
Well, it was worth trying.

It´s most likely two pictures merged. Looks like they are from pit stop practices.

What amazes me most about those overhead shots is how narrow the Red-Bull is at the back compared to the others. The only one that comes close is the McLaren and that`s affected (possibly?) by the panels above stopping airflow hitting the mushroom suspension.
Either side must have a minimum 2 inches extra at the point where the forward rear wishbones enter albeit the angles are different.
The Ferrari on the other hand allthough very linear just looks like she`s got a fat ass (to quote the matrix :) )

Great pics =D>

I note that the shape of the sidepods of the ferrari is different from the other. When the sidepod connects to the floor it has a huge direction change towards the inboard. The other cars have a narrower and more gently profile.

A lot of that is perspective, if you looked from lower down you would see the footprint of the side pods is actually very small on the Merc and the Ferrari as well, they just vent their air at the rear suspension where it is already very turbulent.

I think the distance between the front wheel centre line and start of the cockpit should be the same for all cars?
