But there is no heat source there.
Sometimes they put heat heat schields around the intake manifold because it's close to the engine like in indy here

Maybe is there under the airbox aka "Ferrari style" air-h2o-air intercooler (also gold-ish "box"). Very thin walls and very tight packaging and internal AERO necessitate the extra shielding.

EDIT 1: And remember according insiders infos from tech paddock. Renault has last year huge issues with "knocking" ICE (messed combustion process inside combustion chamber of V6 engine part of the PU). And therefore for precise and stable, predictable AIR temp of intake and watter cooling sys is crucial to reduce that phenomena. So the shielding could help in heat and TEMP management around and inside ICE and overall PU.

Doesn't the lower intake feed a cooler somewhere close to that area? Might be important to let air in the airbox be less affected by this difference in temperature.

I think that the top gold box is the air filter (airbox) and the golden box below is a intercooler. These two should be carefully separated. And this arrangement would also fit to the air intakes. But i don't know what intercooler that could be.

Here's Marussia's solution to the airbox. The top pipe feeds the air to the engine, whilst the bottom one is the intercooler. I'd wager this is a very similar solution.

Would it be possible for teams like Toro Rosso, Ferrari and McLaren to place the cameras at the front of the nose and use them as the minimum frontal area? I'm imagining something similar to what force india had at the start of 2012, but obviously lower.

look closly! the radiator( intercooler?) seems to go straight up to the roll hoop! (no wonder their side pods ate tiny, Xtreme! :mrgreen: )
also ers/oil cooler on the back of the airboxes (top golden snorkel goes to compressor, golden box is inlet manifold)

could it be the other way round? to bottom one goes trough the air-filter and into the engine, the top one is going to the coolers for the gearbox and electronics mounted onto the gearbox?

I'd say he has it right since the turbo/compressor is at the rear.

I'd say that is too small for a 700 horsepower intercooler, even if watercooled.... I dunno.. I have my doubts.. It may just be some other cooler.
