Aero updates for Imola

Imola 06:

Looks like they added some vertical stabilizers on each side of the top of the transmission area. And some gills on either side of the endplates. Also, it looks as if the shape of the diffuser area under the brake light has been lifted up which should improve the downforce generated by the diffuser.

Looks like the front-wing endplates have more of a wiggle to them, and some sort of 'spill-guard' on the top of the rear of them.

Edit: Ferrari 248 F1 - revised front wing

Part of extensive changes to the Ferrari at Imola, designed to improve performance and overall balance. New endplates sport a flat upper profile instead of the previous sculpted one, with a horizontal triangular fin at the rear (1). This improves airflow management close to the wheels. The additional fins on either side of the nosecone (2) now have a wing-shaped profile, which improves airflow efficiency between the chassis and the tyres. All these changes improve the quality of the airflow passing underneath the car, which is then extracted by the rear diffuser.

Also, thought this was a great shot of the mirrors. Very obvious flow conditioners when you see it up this close:

Honda

Added 'ears' in front of both sidepods. Strange curvature to the leading edge of the winglet on the airbox. Is it just me or does the intake for the airbox look smaller?

BMW

This car just keeps getting uglier. The upper front wishbones have some kind of bulbous growth. :)

Does anybody know why the lollipop has such a weird shape?

Edit:
BMW Sauber F1 06 - revised front wing

A slightly different configuration for Imola. The double-decker concept has been revised, with the additional upper profiles shortened by around 5 cm, to reduce drag and improve top speed on this fast circuit. The key factor is the reduced surface area exposed to the airflow. The angle of the wing flap remains unchanged.

A slightly larger bargeboard for BMW at Imola

The fin looks huge on the back of the BMW, it's looks like it's 5cm to touch the rear wing. I wonder if it's to help with flicking the car around the chicanes. Rear wing has constant chord, although it'd be tough to run a spoon wing with that fin on the car.

Bargeboards are massive. Maybe to cleanup airfow going to the diffuser area.

The difference in Mclaren’s asymmetrical chimneys is surprisingly large

Great job analysing the cars ginsu! I've been trying to find what aero changes there have been to the 248 since they talked about a new aero package

Shorter mid-wing for Honda in Imola.

Ferrari often run longer torsion bars on tracks where longer wheel travel is needed. Usually they just poke through the bodywork.

For this race they have covered them, even when they havent for other races this year.

I have heard some rumours that they have something special on the back end this year, but wont expand for fear of another anti-Ferrari attack...!

(this is a technical forum, can anti team rants be done elsewhere or be moderated..?)

It's a great shame you feel you don't want to share such insights with us because of how some members of the board might misconstrue them! I hope you reconsider.

So technical matter can be discussed only one way and if it starts heading in unwanted direction it will be labeled as "ranting"? It is not my or anyone else’s problem that F1 governing body which defines technical regulations and undertakes legality checks has only people from Ferrari as its members. Asking from anyone not to touch in that is equal to asking people to become stupid and not to notice obvious. Technical things can’t be fully analyzed only by their function, material or shape if we already know that F1 politics, governing body or money have influence on their legality or purpose. All I want is equal treatment of F1 teams by FIA and until such climate in F1 appears people will question fairness and point fingers. As I said before, ranting about Ferrari has two ends; pro-Ferrari ranting and anti-Ferrari ranting.

That post pretty much summed up what people are getting sick of manchild.

The teams are being treated fairly. Unfairly would be to not let Toyota or another team run with the carbon rings.

Don't think that there aren't people who are getting sick of what FIA and Ferrari do. I'm fine with fact that thare are two sides but obviously not all allow that possibility.

So I guess that's why they formed GPMA and keep on protesting because of Ferrari's aerodynamics since the beginning of 2006?
