The logic used in the article doesn't make sense. They wrote that McLaren will be behind the top 3 because of the engine not being much faster than the Honda engine, and that implies that they will be closer to the top 3 with if they had more power. Of course that makes no sense considering that Red Bull is part of the top 3 and will have the same amount of power McLaren will have.

Personally I'm waiting for winter testing, I'm sure we'll read the most absurd things in the next few months, I'm fully expecting rumors like "Renault will have 1050 hp" or "Honda's has found 100 hp!".
If it happens big probably Honda would be no 1 engine and Renault no 2. I don't think there's that much gap and in the other hand it's not only power matter.
For example Honda can find only 25-30 hp but very efficient and very good harvesting PU to become very competitive. ( My numbers are only example )

Hmm.
Interesting data from Brundle.
Mercedes has 6% more power than Renault but 11% more power than Honda.

That would point to a 5% power increase in 2018. As an example give Alonso that extra power and he would have easily got Massa in Brazil.

Before anyone asks McLaren have already said that as far as Aero is concerned the Renault would fit into the current package.

Interesting.

If Honda have 900hp

Renault= 954hp

Mercedes= 999hp

or

Honda = 850hp

Renault= 901hp

Mercedes= 943hp

Somewhere between 93-99hp down on Merc and 51-54hp on Renault.

Next year, McLaren could see the power deficit reduced by 1/2.

shows how much lies commentators can spread, they dont even into consideration drag levels of mclaren compared to redbull. just spreading rumours just because the some people at mclaren boast about their chassis. funny. i wonder what they will say when mclaren is slower to a redbull in 2018

Every engine will be better next year, it's just about what engine will improve more.

The full info was comparison compared to Mecerdes.
Ferrari 2% down.
Renault 6% down.
Honda 11% down.

It came from Martin Brundle who was just reporting the data he had been shown. I doubt seriously it was from McLaren as why would McLaren care about Ferrari in that comparison?

So every time someone develop and other too develop at same level? if so why they are keep trying if at the end everything will stay same. Maybe Honda will develop lesser than Renault but thinking in this season's data(!) and talking about next season assuming everything will be same has not any logic.

What does drag have to do with power output of a power unit? You assume Brundle came to those figures based off speed trap numbers, when it's very likely it's come from talking to engineers from the pitlane. That information is shared more freely in the paddock than you'd think. The drag comparison argument is growing old very quickly! It's irrelevant to next year.

Far more logical to assume a similar improvement across the board than a massive jump that Honda will magically make up some ground when they have been unable to do so for the past 3 years.

You were the one being sarcastic with the statement 'Yes because Honda won't develop' as if they are going to suddently find 6% without Renault making any improvements at all.

looks like you havent watch much F1. if you remember mclaren engineeers said the same thing about wining the 2013 and 14 season with mercedes and having a great chassis before the season started. but what happened?, they were the slowest of all the mercedes runners and had the slowest top speed of all mercedes runners. just shows what drag can do to an overall performance of the car
