The Honda engine requires bigger radiators.
Well, that's a problem then.....having physically seen both the McLaren's and STR's radiators up close, the STR's radiators alone were definitely physically larger in dimension.
Further explanation from the McLaren director: "We are not radically changing the car, the 2018 will be 100% an evolution of the current. The radiators required by the Renault unit are smaller than those of Honda, making our aerodynamic set easier. We need to redesign the exchange. I can not tell you anything else, "Boullier told GloboSport.com reporter.

The need for cooling the French power unit is less than that used by Honda. The implication of the smaller radiator is the freedom granted to designers to design lower and more premature sides, with significant gain in aerodynamics, such as less drag and greater airflow to the rear airfoil, another source of aerodynamic pressure generation.
Try not to confuse the fact that Wazari is talking about the 2017 iterations from both teams, and Boullier is only talking about the 2018 Renault V's 2017 Honda.
Obviously all PU manufacturers will have toiled in earnest to reduce the size of just about everything, so no doubt Honda have made improvements in this area as well.

Come on, guys. I know that a lot of you will have over indulged over the holidays, but surely your eyesight has not been affected to the stage that STR Honda thread has suddenly become the McLaren Honda or the McLaren Renault thread. A number of off topic posts have been removed, so if you want to be heard, please stick to the topic. Otherwise your posts will vanish, just like Santa' sleigh.

It is very difficult because of all the shenanigans involving mclaren, toro rosso, Renault and Honda since the Singapore announcement. Add in Red Bulls involvement with having Renault engines in 2018 while helping develop the 2019 Honda PU and there is a whole bunch of talk around how all of this will pan out. There is so much sniping between all of these organisations that it is hard to separate talk in these individual threads.

Honda will have its current Formula 1 engine available as a back-up if there are problems with its 2018 specification.
Honda completed a major revamp of its engine design over the 2016-17 winter, but a problem with the oil system put it on the back foot at the start of the season and it endured many problems trying to recover.
"We haven't decided next year's complete specification but at least we have a back-up plan, which is the current engine. So, I'm sure we can start the season well next year.
Not good news I think !!!! :( :o :(

It looks like this article time traveled. I don't think that it gives any hint about Honda development stage

So Renault did have mgu-k issues in 2017 because the new unit was so unreliable that a hacked together 2016 version had to be used which added 5kg or so to all Renault powered cars. It appears they are still having issues with this 2017/18 mgu-k because it is still not working on the 2018 engine.
True and false.

They did have issues with the 2017 MGU-K but just in testing. They never ran the 2017 MGU-K in races. They Ran the 2016 for the whole 2017 season. The 2017 MGU-K is running in testing for 2018, They are having issues with it.

My point was they can run the 2016 MGU-K in 2018 and not have any issues.

Of course you mean that if they use 2016 MGU-K, Renault will not live reliability problem.
other wise using two years old MGU-K is an issue itself when had designed a new one but can not use

Agreed. It would be preferable to run the 2017 model, if it were trouble free.

There is no proof of this capability of the 2016 mgu-k being able to work with the 2018 engine and it would then again leave Renault teams with a 5kg deficit if it was used. Renault should really be looking at something a little more reliable then that 2017 mgu-k unit but not as old as the 2016 unit.

And it is in the season which they allowed to use only 2 MGU-K for whole season?

I am a "Die Hard" McLaren fan but I also like Honda and are very, very sad to see Honda suffer like this.

Hope them all the best for the future !!! I am still in two minds if the Renault move was the correct one !!!

Hope Honda and McLaren can come back in 2021 and rule like 1988 !!!
