That engine is so well packaged and probably over refined to the point the safety factors for cooling are very marginal.

What is most striking to me is that that there was nothing wrong with the engine. No issues with combustion or radiators or pumps.This was a perfectly fine engine, that simply wasn't designed for a 40 degree ambient. The design is too refined.
A source from within the team said the opening up of the bodywork they did cost them about 5 tenths of a second per lap in Austria.

What's amazing is that they spent so much time off throttle and were still faster than everyone apart from Ferrari and RedBull, and even then it took Vettel quite a few laps to catch up and pass Lewis after Seb made his second stop. Which suggests they were still carrying very good corner speeds.
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.

Changes for cooling your car will always mean you lose some aero.

Seeing the Merc sidepods I don't think it's design lends itself well to open up the rear.

No, the small double-barrel outlet was in use earlier this year and also last year. Its been a distinctive feature for them as they dont appear much larger than the main exhaust pipe. The outlet used at Spielberg is flatter at the top and wider.

But the first picture you previously showed was the early pre-season car. The sidepods are "fat" where the Petronas logo is.

This. I read they were lifting and coasting 400 meters?! Also is it just me or Hamilton taking T1 rather weird? So wide? Off kerbs?

He did that a few times in free practice during his qualy sims. I actually think it is the faster way through that corner because they don't seem to lose anything straddling that kerb.

The advantage they have is they dont “need” to bring one. They can afford to push any upgrades back to work on them more and maybe roll them into other upgrades. Unlike other teams who will be wanting to bring upgrades to the track as soon as.

The german one, if true, maybe is so big because a) its been worked on for so long and b) is two or more rolled into one.

It’s vaporware until there’s a source attributed to it.
