The engine cover is now much more shrink wrapped I think.

That's some extreme sidepod packaging stuff there.

Looks like they're trying to emulate the high sidepod inlet without lowering the upper SIPS.

Also the engine cover looks crazy.

And it seems only Car # 18 has the full upgrade, because Checo has been running the old spec :?: :wtf:

Sensible approach looking at the big upgrade.Perez can provide relative data with old spec for comparison.

Fair point. The upgrade does look similar to mid season upgrade to W10 last year. The front wing is virtually same.

The old one looks like the Mercedes W10 from testing 2019 and the new one looks like the Abu Dhabi 2019 Mercedes W10 with the tighter sidepods update!

I don't remember any version W10 with these sidepods.
Seems more like the sidepods on Alpha Tauri and Williams(but more compact).

In my opinion, they took inspiration from the 2018 W09 (see the Austrian sidepods). Because of the new regulations, they're not be allowed to move the lateral safety cones, so they are trying to move the air intakes higher without changing the whole monocoque. Hope it's helpful :D

Indeed, the W10 never ran with sidepods like these. While it did have a strong slope, this didn't continue all the way down.

They possibly continued this ramp down because they couldn't manage to keep airflow attached otherwise. A solution like this gives up quite a bit of the coke bottle shape

This is almost a retro design. Run the air from above to the coke-bottle earlier.

Imagine this air flow but without the exhaust... Air from above comes down to make up for the squared off shape. Supposed to reduce side-pod lift... and increase energy in the coke bottle area.

Yes, if i recall correctly RedBull was pretty much designed around this concept in 2013. Although not as tight as they are able to get the cars nowadays. There was less room back then because the cars were a little bit shorter and I think the engines were bulkier too (V8 vs V6's now). Even with the complicated hybrid system they managed to make these things incredibly compact.
