Red Bull's Motorsport Consultant Helmut Marko said that they agreed with the Japanese manufacturer to continue using the Honda engine after 2021, but they expect the FIA to decide to freeze the engines for the official signature.
“Freezing engine development would be a smart step for Formula 1. All issues with Honda have been resolved, but the engine supply contract cannot be signed until we receive written guarantees from the FIA that the engines will be frozen. We expect this to come next week. "

Marko said that they do not have a plan B and if the engines are not frozen they can consider their future in sport.

Development freeze vote to take place on Jan 25th

34 voters, including all teams, engine manufacturers, FIA and commercial rights holders.

https://racingnews365.com/formula-1-tea ... january-25

Majority of 27 required to secure an engine freeze.

FIA - 10 votes
Liberty - 10 votes
Teams - 1 vote
Engine M - 1 vote

I can't see this ending good with Toto Wolff and Mercedes ? against F1 introducing BOP.

Red Bull's future direction depends on Ferrari and Mercedes. 😬

Sadly I only see this going 1 way, engine freeze with performance balance

FIA 10 - want level playing field
F1 10 - want level playing field
RB 1 - want engine freeze
At - 1 want engine freest
Honda 1 - will side with RB/AT
Ferrari 2 - want to be on par with MB
HASS 1 - will side with Ferrari
AT 1 - will side with Ferrari

Total 27 - vote passed

Mercedes and Renault have 7 votes. Red Bull need Mercedes and Ferrari to agree to an engine freeze with BOP.

Toto Wolff is for a freeze, but is against BOP.

Ferrari is for an engine freeze if the FIA bring the new regs forward a year.

Ferrari don’t want to be on par with Mercedes, but surpass them.
Their only motivation to agree on an engine freeze is bringing the new engine regs forward to 2024 instead of 2025.

Why would Merc not want a freeze? a locked in advantage.

They would, but Ferrari would veto it, as there’s no way they’ll put up with a power deficit locked in for a few years

You think that’s going to happen? The best Ferrari can hope for is to match, and if BOP happens they get that without spending a penny

Why are you so sure about that? Why shouldn't they be able to surpass them come 2022 or even 2023?

Because history says other wise, after 7 years there still 50bhp behind

what makes you sure they can?

As I said, best case scenario is they catch them up, but seeing as the BOP was Ferraris idea incase a team was behind when the freeze started, I guess the evidence says Ferrari agree with me

Alpine/Renault will be the biggest loser if they are indeed holding there new engine until 2022. All that work would be obsolete if they can’t introduce it.

Even if this vote passes, what happens when new engine regs kick in? Back to renault? So all of this is just delaying it for a few years?
