 Return of the big Engine Cover?
It looks like they're alternating between the engine covers.

Top is Austria (same as Silverstone), bottom is Hungary - probably just more cooling?

I'd think so based on Saturday. Sunday, they really didn't need it but I doudt you can make that change in parc Ferme....Only like for like parts.

Interesting. I wonder if they are to combat any pivoting of the wing (in order to pass the new tests)?
That would be my thoughts. Budkowski said those where the only updates left.
+ some lightweight parts (Budkowski) that were put in the car in Hungary (AMuS)

It’s a huge cooler. It’s really shocking that their sidepods weren’t smaller. I anticipate some more teams might go this route next season.

None of that will be the same next year. Many teams already have that. Its symbolic of the amount of cooling this years PU needed.

Also Alpine have no issue showing this picture to public/internet. Why. Because new engine and new cooling solutions which will be featured on 22' car have no relation to 21' car.

Do we know which cooler it is? If it is a water cooler that would place a lot of weight high (bad for CoG), however if is the inter cooler it will be air-air and significantly lighter. It would also play into aero-efficiency too as it effectively makes a very large piece of bodywork into a through-flow device and potentially help rear wing downforce.
Perspective - Understanding that sometimes the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view.

From size I'd suggest CAC

It actually looks like 2 separate coolers, notice the color difference. The top part takes the feed from the Middle top hole of the air inlet. The holes to the left and right of that feed the turbo. The rest of the rad take the air from the larger lower hole in front of the drivers helmet.

I dont think that the 2021 cooling system is very different from the 2018-to-2020 one (because the engine is largely the same as 19 and 20). The only big difference is the position of the 2021 CCS (centerline cooling system). The 2021 system is clearly a compromise.
The extra-large rollhoop is due to workaround solutions around the old tub.
In 2021, Enstone opted to push the CCS (which used to lay above the engine since 2018) backwards and put it behind the engine, in a more upright position, like most teams (8/10) do...

(Pink area is where the CCS used to be and red is where it is now)

(it is the Caterham 2014 spec, but the compressor duct shape is comparable to the usual RSF1 team duct) https://i.imgur.com/SADFe07.jpg

But Alpine didnt want to spend their tokens and their money modifying their 2019 monocoque. They wanted to keep the same tub and opted to spend their two tokens on the rear suspension wishbones. And that 2018-2019 rollhoop feeds the cooling rads with the lower intake, and the compessor with the upper intake, unlike most 'CCS' users.
So Enstone worked around this, they kept the intakes largely the same, but they split the traditional Renault compressor duct (green here) in two separate ducts. Why? so the new CCS duct can pass between them, from the lower rollhoop intake to that red area near the back of the car. And the separation and the spacing of these two ducts is the reason the bodywork became much wider there (+ the big ass CCS rad).

So the compressor ducts kinda look like this inside

Here, the top (simplified) drawing illustrates the 2018-2020 layout (the CCS -in pink- hangs above the engine), while the lower drawing shows the 2021 packaging (the CCS becomes bigger, to free up some sidepod and floor space, and moves backwards), so the team had to split the compressor duct (blue) in two ducts, and spread them, to pass the CCS duct in-between
Image
it's a modified @albrodpul drawing

---> This RS19 tub was tailored for the 2018-2019-2020 cooling system, not the 2021 one. And Alpine didnt want modify their tub in 2021, so they had to "cobble together " those solutions under the engine cover, to integrate the 2021 system without touching the tub, and those workarounds made the engine cover wider.

So why did they change their 2018 to 2020 cooling concept in the first place?

It seems the previous CCS could cool the ERS AND some of the engine coolant. So they've probably increased this ability in 2021 and made the CCS cool even more engine liquid in order to shrink the sidepod rads. So this new CCS could no longer fit in the usual location, so they moved it to the rear.
