Red Bull RB16B

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Predictably, Max took out some rear wing.

Bodes well if dry, everyone on the grid went barn door.
I wonder when the other teams noticed, MV only completed an out lap….
Sure did but it's fine

That is good news! But tbh, I was wondering what they thought when they clocked his aero set-up?

The team expected rain and just had to make sure Max could drive with intermediates with that set up, which he confirmed after quali that the car had good grip with the inters. Those last few laps on slicks were masterclass.

Yeah the guys on the softer compounds stood out for those few laps. I. couldn't believe it when we saw Giovinazzi overtaking Lando when they were trying to tip toe around.

No spring at all???

I also wonder whether some wishbones these days are one piece from right to left. Carbon-comp being bendy enough to discard a actual pivot point al together.
But just suppose it weren't hypothetical.

Might the discs on the right be a stack of Belleville washers? Or a bellows that contains hydraulic fluid that’s pumped elsewhere.

There also seems to be a lack of an inerter. Maybe they’re experimenting for next year?

I really wonder. Might be the actual spring is in the bottom where the ARB is, and this is only a guide with sensor. It looks like bellevilles indeed, but that would mean a travel of a few mm. The black/green turn thingy near the presumed bellevilles looks like a ride height adjuster to me.
But just suppose it weren't hypothetical.

They use torsion bar springs for the individual wheel springs. These run through the pivot point of the bell crank. This device is the third spring (heave spring).

The device between the two rockers is usually a combined spring and inerter. The previous version was much bigger diameter. It’s difficult to see how this new device performs both functions in the way the previous one did given its reduced size.

Next year inerters are banned.

Maybe not anything new but cool to see the flow around the sidepods a bit.

Interesting that the two cars have slightly different "flow viz" marks around the sidepods. I wonder if that is due to something such as slightly different front wing settings. (right click to open hi-res image)
