we have next race update in Spain. If nothing going to improve, they will stick with 6th Place. Alonso will retire finally. Thanks Alpine aka Renault.

At this point it is not a question of if anything goes wrong anymore, but rather what will go wrong in the race - at least for Alonso. The guy can't catch a break. If Alpine does not fail him during the pitstop, there was a good chance to undercut Gasly and score some well-deserved points this weekend.

Absolutely. That slow stop cost him dearly. 5.5sec I believe it was?

Just finished watching the highlights.
Solid race for ocon to score after yesterday.
Alonso down around 10 seconds throughout the race. Half lost in the pitstop and half for that silly move on gasly. Anyhow still some points.
Didn't expect this track to suit the car at all. Next race will be interesting to see how much time we're losing in s3 compared to the others. Slow speed corners is still the biggest weakness. Tyre deg looked better

Edit just found about the second penalty. Damn that's harsh considering the vettel incident and other things which went unnoticed. Bad call imo. guy can't catch a break

Also, they need more power from the PU. Think it's about time they start dialing it up.

I'm hoping they're still running it in conservative mode.

I still think that the hybrid is not so good, since the acceleration dynamics is lower than SF's and RBR's. I wonder if it is possible to get some insides from Benjamin Lanneau from Viry. Via Instagram

Not sure what you're saying. Maybe, lost in tran.

I can tell you, Alpine has taller gears ...so that will make it harder to accelerate. That being said I don't see a power problem in the lower speeds. I see it accelerate very fast, once they get on the throttle. I'm expecting more speed in the top end cause of the taller gears but I didn't see that in Miami. If I remember correctly, it kind of plateaued at 10.k RPM.

I think the problem to overtake Gasly was the bad traction at low speed corner and not the lack of power.

Maybe that very top speed doesn't exist unlike Red Bull cause they have an effective mgu-k. Perhaps the gearbox is just not as good, and does not quite correlate with the ability of the engine. Therefore, STROLL easily caught up with Alonso, since AM shift into eighth gear at 285 km/h and at the same 10.5 k RPM

Top speed isn't a problem really. I'm just expecting more ...
SPEED TRAP KM/H
 1 11 S. PEREZ 334.6
 2 1 M. VERSTAPPEN 334.3
 3 23 A. ALBON 330.2
 4 10 P. GASLY 327.9
 5 22 Y. TSUNODA 327.5
 6 14 F. ALONSO 327.4
 7 44 L. HAMILTON 327.0
 8 18 L. STROLL 326.7
 9 20 K. MAGNUSSEN 326.5
10 47 M. SCHUMACHER 326.5
11 24 G. ZHOU 326.4
12 77 V. BOTTAS 326.0
13 16 C. LECLERC 325.6
14 5 S. VETTEL 325.5
15 63 G. RUSSELL 325.0
16 6 N. LATIFI 324.3
17 4 L. NORRIS 323.5
18 55 C. SAINZ 323.0
19 3 D. RICCIARDO 322.0
You can see below that Gasly is saving time on the straights but not as much as he's losing in the curvey sections. Which is what you'd expect if someone is carying more DF.

This is the Alonso Lap where he was blocked by Sainz, he lost 2 tenths there, in the part of the graph between the 1 and 2.

The Graph show how hard it is to make up time on a straight, even long ones like in Miami. How easy it is to lose 2 tenths under braking or in a curve.

If what you suspect is true, does it mean the engine doesn't have enough power to keep(pushing?) their top speed in 8th gear with lower rpm? As you mention we see Alonso's car in 7th gear all the way on the straight quite often and seeing how Lewis pass Fernando in second lap, this car definitely lack a bit of straight line speed be it the problem of engine or gear ratio.

It's a fact that they have taller gears. I can see it in the data. More than 500rpm in every gear compared to Merc/AMR and William's (they all use the same transmission). Ferrari's gears are even shorter(not by much). RBR/SAT are half way between Merc and Alpine. McLaren very close to Alpine.

Merc aren't faster on Straights than Alpine, they gained alot of time in the slow and medium corners.

I suspect they might be down on power but it is REALLY hard to see in the data. You cannot compare how much drag the different cars are carrying but they never run much rear wing. Which is what makes me suspicious.

So for now they seem to mismatch their engine and gearbox ratio to get maximum out of the car. I highly doubt that they really made a mistake on that but instead I think they expected more power from the engine when they set this gear ratio. May be this prove that they haven't maximized the engine power somehow and we should have more to come, which is positive.

this also could explain the difference between qualy pace and race pace.
