Aston Martin AMR22

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

The AMR22 front wing end plates are very straight compared to the Haas which featured inward-to-outward curves, and the show car which leans diagonally inwards to the inside shoulder of the front wheel.
Looks more out-washy but they're sacrificing diveplane span - whereas the Haas was aiming at maximizing that.
right. I noticed from the aerial view, the end plate top edge has a subtle inward-to-outward curve, starting inward from the front.

Now back to the car...
I like it the concept here. The tea tray is the most interest part to me. It has some holes going under the floor. Like a central vortex to prevent on side of the under-floor from influencing the other side?

Is it me or the engine blister seems to be shaped like an upside-down wing profile this time, to crate a low pressure zone under the "cripto.com" that helps air extraction from the gills :?:

the floor detail looks interesting, can someone who can see aero comment on this compared to the other floors so far?

What purpose do the slits on the side pods serve?

Interesting detail on the rear wing elements:

Once they start tuning the rear wing, won't the main plane be "desaligned" with side planes?
How will the rear wing be adjusted? where are the pivot points so if can move?

rear wings aren't adjusted, they have a range of fixed level wings. Short of adding/removing gurney flaps they aren't adjustable like a front wing

Are there minimum radius rules for the sidepods? The transition from the flat panel to the rest of the sidepod is quite sharp.
Yes. What flat panel do you mean?

I don't think the minimum radius rule applies to the junction of the floor and the sidepod.

I think Haas concept looks far better. To have so many gills for cooling is not good for aero. Basic concept of Adrian Newey is to have tight rear and sloping engine cover. Aston Martin concept of huge undercat is far less stabile aero concept.

Where did you find a photo of holes in the tea tray? There does seem to be a winglet on the splitter.

AM are going for a 90's type car with wide and bluff sidepods I guess (albeit now undercut, like the unsuccessful Ferrari 92A). Like Newey's MP4/13 (or most of the other F1 cars from the 90's and early 00's): https://www.goodwood.com/globalassets/. ... width=1600

STR 6 with gills is probably a better comparison

Is it just me but it feels like the sidepods packaging is a lot beefier than that it was before? Did we take a step back on packaging or did Aston do this intentionally?
It suggests the radiators are now packaged very flat with the majority/all of the flow through them exiting out of the top of the sidepod

I don’t think it’s fair to Adrian and the rest of the RB staff to lock in their design by what has been done before.

The gills releasing hot air along the top of the sidepods may be a much better solution than dumping it into the expansion of air at the top of the tunnel.

Also, I wouldn’t look at old designs. Technology / understanding was very rudimentary the last time they had ground effects than today.

I wonder what the idea is behind the large sidepods. Maybe it is to optimise flow to the beam wing. Maybe they have done it to maximise the use of the cooling louvres so that they only need a tiny cooling outlet at the back
