Red Bull RB18

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Could this (red circles) be holes and the plank itself is hollow? Or is this not allowed?
Green area is also very interesting, but I have no idea what's going on there...

The circled area is max 50mm thick. The vortex from the floor strakes has the same bulk rotation as the orientation of that surface.

If you add tangential airflow to a vortex, you will add more momentum to the rotation and lower the pressure at the core.

That's the theory behind the fire vortex

Wow, indeed. I wonder to.
But just suppose it weren't hypothetical.

In the AD (reliable newspaper) there is an article about the RB18. Verstappen's car freed from ballast: "

"I have heard from a very reliable source that they have had a good solved 75 percent of the problem," he [Tom Coronel] enthuses.
“About seven kilos have been removed from the car. I understand that they have made the floor lighter and have been able to lighten many more components a bit.”

In the article it is assumed that this will already be in Melbourne (7kg less),
but Helmut Marko talked about Imola earlier.

Although Tom Coronel is quite close with the Verstappen's, I should take this with an pinch of salt. It's not the first time his prediction were bold, but were just a little bit different in real life. Although if true it is good news indeed. Hopefully the RB18 on a diet is as reliable as last season.

If they have a strong rear end, they can make the front end braking components smaller and lighter because the rear end does more of the braking. That's unsprung mass you're shaving off, removing 1kg there is like taking 4kg from the chassis itself. If you can make the front suspension, front nose, front and rear wings, front brakes, and some other miscellaneous things lighter, it can be the equivalent of 7kg even though the scales only show like 3kg. It's about where you're shaving weight, not just the weight itself.

Interesting to compare the differences in leading edge floor thickness between those cars.

Also interesting that RB have the inboard leading edge low, the outboard high. That's the opposite of the others.
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.

A lot of things going on in that photo. So much for simplified suspensions. Two separate heave elements, two separate roll elements.

Just above the reference plane (that the plank is attached to, there are two small features in the tunnel wall that do not descend below the reference plane (almost looking like two wave crests).
You're right, I couldn't tell quite what they were before. Apparently there is some freedom in the rules for floor shape as it relates to minimum radius sizes. No holes or anything like that allowed, but RB are adding what look like over-expansion features. Interesting what it would look like from below. The RB Chrismas tree:

I found the RedBull Rb18 underbody and floor particularly interesting as it reminded me of the keel of a large boat as well as the underbody of a speedboat/yacht.
I think that's what the Christmas tree is for.

While we're on the topic of marine engineering and how it relates to F1

Near the end you see boats use a way to bleed suction from recessed trim tabs to let the hull plane out correctly.

The red component behind the “heave” spring is interesting, the mechanism looks as though it may go over centre aiding the torsion bar at first but then possibly working against it.
