McLaren MCL36

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

According to AMUS, new floor on the MCL36 for France:

Interesting bit with the barge board looking like a separate surface glued/attached on to the floor rather than a curvature of the floor like in every other car.
Do you mean the bottom edge? That looks like aluminium to me and might be there to prevent damage to the bottom of the carbon fibre.

AMuS: The floor was modified at the edges and one of the four baffles in the front part of the floor got a new shape. New parts are also to be added in Hungary. This is the path that Mercedes has now taken. Experiment, understand and then change in detail.

Since the concept change at the Spanish GP, McLaren has developed its car more on the narrow gauge. The engineers first wanted to understand their car. And the budget cap forces the teams to only bring new parts to the car if they guarantee faster lap times.

I mean like the outer strake sticks out rather than curve itself into the rest of the floor, surely it's gonna be shedding some vortices.

You can see how it sticks out, it even projects a little tiny shadow onto the floor.

The context. And the description matches the Alpine updates here (small, subtle) not the MCL ones (bigger, visible)
https://www.auto-motor-und-sport.de/for ... rankreich/
Alpine wants to make things as difficult as possible for McLaren and is continuing its policy of small steps. They are now getting smaller and smaller, but according to the team, more and more efficient. The latest step is barely visible, but should bring decent lap time. The underbody has been modified at the edges and one of the four baffles in the front part of the floor has been given a new shape.

It looks good. Hopefully this helps their efficiency as that is really hurting them with their midfield fight. Is the outboard edge of the ramp raised (ridge-like) like Alpine's?

As already stated, Dan is running the upgrade. Ramp on the sidepods looks more Alpine-esque.
