McLaren MCL36

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

An interesting view of the changes to the MCL36 from the launch version:

The sidepod inlets don't change at all in that view, so not the highest level of detail.
It's for a game. The models were obviously finished before McLaren introduced that change.

It's precisely that it's for a game that they miss the little details, to ensure the graphics processing is accessible to a multitude of consumers. There is floor detail missing from that model which appears to cover up to the French GP, or thereabouts. My point is just that it is a dumbed down version of the car and it just needs to bear a likeness, not be accurate.

I think the before and after pics on this site are more informative, but it is still interesting to look at.

I’m still amazed at how far forward the rads are mounted! Impressive array of temp pads on the gold foil & nice to see the Louvre detail on the rad outlet.

The cleanness of the internal packaging is as beautiful as the car itself.

What you think, Major redisign next year? That's why they're leaving it exposed to pictures like this?

So my initial simplified drawing wasnt too far off. Here a less simplified one.

Now I get the logic behind the Mcl monocoque shape.

1-Like RB, they pushed the cockpit far rearwards, which brings a couple of benefits at least (that lets you increase the size of the tunnel mouths laterally, and also longitudinally, thanks to more backward low side impact structures)
2- To avoid pushing the heavy PU too far rearwards, Mclaren opted for a wide fuel tank and to not use big tub undercuts. (Which should lower the center of gravity since the fuel sits a bit lower in the tank) ...

But RB uses big tub undercuts, and unlike MCL who placed the lower SIS inside the sidepod, RB placed it much lower inside the floor (amongst many other organs of the car), to have big those sidepod undercuts
