2022 car comparison thread

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

The Merc and Alpine cockpit and driver seem to be positioned much more forward than many cars

*And the RB cockpit is positionned much more backwards

And the Mclaren is like the RB

I made a side comparison from photos at the recent Japanese GP.
Credits to Motorsportimages Zak Mauger and XPB

it is not 100% accurate to scale or positioning of the cars

Indeed max was running the medium df wing (Silverstone, suzuka) in fp1/2 whilst Perez used the high df wing (Monaco, Singapore etc)

Interesting! I wonder if that was for genuine comparison purposes or due to parts lifing considerations?

Yes could be either. If it remains the same again today then I'd rule out the former, and maybe introduce another possibility which is that Perez prefers a stable rear end, especially in higher speed. Sector 1 max can live with the lower rear downforce perhaps

Way off topic here, but that picture looks like one of those ‘slightly off’ photos that seem to bend (whether due to being different colours or a face made to look symmetrical).

Back on topic, really pleased that what almost everyone thought at this time last year - “these rules are so prescriptive, all of the cars will look the same” - just hasn’t happened.

The ride heights seemed to be higher, is that the consensus?

Very similar across the 3 teams at Interlagos, which was unusual across the whole season

Isn't the track between the camera and the car raised at the front, covering some of the front tyre, thus giving the illusion of higher rake, at least to some degree?
