McLaren MCL60

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

McLaren has Marelli as a partner who supplies them the entire cooling system including the air to air intercoolers.

Probably that's why McLaren has not opted for the Reaction Engines liquid intercooler who is a partner of Mercedes.

Aston and Williams don't have any partners for cooling technologies which is why they are running the Reaction Engines liquid intercooler.

Very high inner floor inlet and also looking like very high tunnels. Are they are not yet ready to lower those tunnels and get some decent floor downforce?
And they call it a stall. A STALL!

Judging by the sloppy cable routing, they have some temporary thermocouples (typically green wires) on the cooling for data logging (visible below the radiators)

Do smaller tunnels create more downforce?

Lower tunnels speed up the air more, reducing the pressure and increasing downforce. Too low, and you get really violent bouncing, as Mercedes discovered the hard way last year.
And they call it a stall. A STALL!

It’s a balancing act, in F1 they have intake throat and diffuser size restrictions. This means they need to find the optimal tunnel size/height for those restrictions.

If you look at other classes (eg time attack) that have less (or no) restrictions, the tunnels are bigger/higher, but the intake throat and diffuser sizes are also larger.

That's interesting I was told they were using the printed intercoolers ages ago, so either someone's been pulling my leg or perhaps that's part of the planned upgrades. Doesn't make much sense to tell me that long ago though. I think I'm going to have to go talk to some people
Seems like I need to be more wary about single sources again...
