Mercedes W14

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Red Bull still seems one of the only teams with a rounded floor tunnel though. The front portion of the floor is more reminiscent of the Ferrari with the strake layout, aside from the kick out of the lowest section.

According to the technical list it’s only floor fence.

Still looks kind of basic to be honest especially in terms of the underfloor fences.
Seems less basic than the early W13 at least, it somewhat resembles the early-spec RB18 now in terms of preferring lateral expansions and contractions (with the various notches at the step) over vertical ones to reduce ride height sensitivity like Red Bull's 2022 launch spec? :)

It also has the cutout ahead of the rear wheel like the early RB18 floor too.

Of course they were there since W14 launch if this is not a new spec. :)

So one might say the Mercedes is starting to resemble the launch RB18 from the start of 2022 not only over the topside downwashing bodywork, but underneath too?

There is some similarity between Merc's latest floor and the RB18/19. The treatment at the rear of the boat section is similar. The kink in the boat section at the middle of the floor is also similar. This is a great contrast to what Merc debuted the W13 with.
Excellent points!

Perfect underbody shot - probably the rarest angle to ever see one of these cars from. The most interesting part for me is probably seeing how sculpted the underside of the front nose is just ahead of the monocoque join - almost seems like it's similar in concept to the bulge/channel that the 2019-2021 mercedes had just ahead of the cape (except, without the cape?). Maybe some downwash or vorticity shedding to feed the floor with is the goal of such a shape?

the throat area is so much more forward than on the red bull racing, just behind the floor fences

The Mercedes looks to have rounded sections as well to me, at least the area directly behind the vanes.

That's the Ferrari and Mercedes floor then in Monaco. Only Red Bull and Aston left from the top teams.
Perez has obliged

Difficult to say, but looking at it more and more, its starting to look rounded. Probably need some unique lighting to be 100% sure

Based on these two lines, I wouldn't say its too rounded

The W14 floor looks so 'basic' and rudimentary compared to the RB19 floor (for which we should thank Perez for the preview).

Yeah, but don’t mistake complicated ≠ better.

RB’s floor works great in the concept of their entire car, but their strength is likely what’s happening on the top from a drag standpoint, but it all matters.

It has to work within the whole design. Ferrari, Merc, etc knew what Redbull’s floor looked like last year and they still pursued what they did, and there is a reason for that. Aero isn’t additivive
