7-8 tenths? My brain doesn't remember this, perhaps to save my psyche.
I doubt we can take any pattern for McLaren's Barcelona performance from last year. The car was the pre-updated MCL60. Effectively we are 4 major upgrades or new cars since then. I doubt the attributes of the upgraded MCL60, let alone it's horrible parent car, are an effective comparison for the current cars strengths and weaknesses. For sure, Barcelona will provide a good reference for this car, "going forward". Do we still have arguably the best mid-high speed car like Silverstone last year? I doubt it - look no further back than the slightly disappointing Suzuka performance this year. What I do think is that the reliable correlation and adaptability of 38B should put McLaren in the mix for at last a podium.

It has been pointed out that McLaren are the only team with a 100% finishing record with 100% of the laps run, and Lando is the only driver to score points in every round this year. (He would have been joined by Oscar but for Carlos's lunge at Miami!) We have 212 points compared to 17 last year! Hope that doesn't put the mockers on the team.
It's hard to disagree. It's just that a year ago Lando performed well in qualifying and so badly in the race. And the incident with Lewis took place. Since then the car has become much faster, but the rivals are not standing still either. So far I can only foresee that the density of results may be preserved. For Formula 1 this is good. It's a pity that the FIA is not smart enough to freeze the technical regulations for, say, 8 years. Then the density of results would be impressive. :)

I can even add to your thought. Last season McLaren finished the season in fourth place. This year, even if there is a third place, it is fully deserved and will be done thanks to the team staff and drivers. So far the team is moving in the right direction, climbing higher and higher in the constructors' cup.
Perhaps I am missunderstanding your words, but 4th was also fully deserved last year. They were nowhere for half the season, and while it's true that McLaren was the 2nd fastest car for quite some races after their major upgrades last year, Mercedes was much more consistent and Ferrari actually improved substantially towards the end of the season.

With Oscar being a rookie last year, I doubt they would have been able to slash away the huge points advantage Mercedes and Ferrari had built up by the time McLaren became competitive.

Yes, that's right. Last year team deserved fourth place. This year team more than deserve third place. The team is progressing and that's great.

I don't know how else my words could have been understood. :)

The drivers are driving more and more consistently, the speed of the car allows them to fight in the leading group. All this allows us to progress from year to year. Then, last year, in the spring, it was hard for us to understand how the team could fail so much after a good average season in 2022. But later, after major updates, the team was able to bounce back. This year, the beginning was somewhat similar, but now the team is consistently in the top 4 without falling out of the bounds.

The team have been much more solid across all facets. While they didn't start the season strongly to have 212 points against 17 at the same point is.... encouraging. McLaren scored 302 across all of last season but this year it looks like 600 could be a reasonable target. If Mercedes insert themselves into the battle then that would take points away. 3rd or 2nd in the WCC looks there for the taking but of more interest is if McLaren can get among the podiums and wins through the majority of the season. Already Lando is within a few points of Charles for second in the WDC.

It's generally acknowledged that the Barcelona circuit favours a wide compliance, that is a mix of fast, medium, and a few slow speed corners plus a long straight. The McLaren being regarded as now an all-rounder, could challenge Max again with the recent trend of Lando's good tyre preservation skills and fast finishing. We watch with great interest to see if the promise can be fulfilled.

Do you think that the Red Bull as a car still has a slight upper hand in terms of speed or is it just Max?

Do you think that the Red Bull as a car still has a slight upper hand in terms of speed or is it just Max?
Max is a phenomenal, generational force, one of the greats. His speed, never in doubt, is now backed up by every factor a successful driver needs to dominate. From this perspective it's hard to assess the relative merits of the Red Bull to it's challengers. Checo has had a crisis of confidence (again) and the car is a very sharp blade that can only be mastered by...... a master. The RB20 is no longer a dominant car but still a competitive car. It has a much narrower range of mastery than we believed prior to Ferrari, then McLaren, getting their acts together. We are all looking for another read from Barcelona on the relative performances of the three leading cars, on not just sector by sector but corner by corner to see where advantages lie. Over the last four races since the McLaren upgrade it looks like the McLaren is marginally the best car but Barcelona is a track that was traditionally selected as the winter test circuit because it provided such a basis for assessing relative merits. It will be that again this weekend. It could well be that the Red Bull will be the best car there. If Checo gets on the podium, which I doubt, or Max wins by about the length of a pitstop, which I doubt, then it will be fair to say it's still the best car.

As I expected earlier, if the team finds out the reason for the big speed increase in slow corners, they won’t tell us why, and that’s right. Nobody has cancelled intellectual property. The main thing that Stella said is that this package was a success and that it can still be further developed and improved. This cannot but please. Let’s see what the top teams bring to Barcelona. Let’s see what strengths and weaknesses the leading cars have. The long turn 10 was very difficult last year. I even seem to remember that in this turn alone 2 or 3 tenths were lost.

If the team is able to continue to develop, then who knows, maybe before the summer break McLaren will be first in pure speed. Dreams, yes, dreams. But there is no harm in dreaming. In the last five races McLaren have consistently entered the top 2 in pure pace over the race distance.

Papaya team, let’s go!
I remember some laps losing 7-8 tenths into T10-11, I think loses will still be there and the hairpin but its too hard to tell these days.
7-8 tenths? My brain doesn't remember this, perhaps to save my psyche.

This was delta to Hamilton..delta through those corners was like +0.6 +0.7.. But yeah It doesn't really matter for this year, first race this year where I have little clue of the pecking order.

Finding Spain far more difficult to quantify in terms of order because the teams are far closer (All four teams also looking to bring some form of upgrades which will be of difference performance so…), I do feel overall Red Bull will open a gap to macca, merc and Ferrari..as we go back to conventional ride height and suspension settings. Problem for Mclaren is in outright cornering I don’t see a particular corner profile that we hold an outright advantage on compared to Red Bull, even on heavier fuel they can match in the high speed, the only way I see us being quicker is if there was some anomalous thermal behavior with the tyres like in Imola…

Yes, it is impressive. The main loss of time is at the exit of Turn 10 or is it already the entry to Turn 11? Or closer to the apex of Turn 12? In any case, the losses are very big.

According to Autosport's sources, Newey's visit to the Aston Martin factory was real.
Aston Martin continues to raise the terms, but Mercedes and McLaren are also said to be pushing in the background to get Newey.
The possibility of a Ferrari is not being talked about as much as it used to be.

Of course. He just can't wait to drive some of those fantastic F1 classics from the MTC at classic events over the next few years.

Newey would be crackers to not find out what everyone is offering him- he needs to know how much he is worth
