That’s the rear wing they tried in practise in Melbourne but decided to use the other medium downforce rear wing because of the rain on Sunday I believe.
Just a fan's point of view

Yes, true, also in Bahrain test days they tried this RW configuration, and in Melbourne only on Lando's car, in FP1 just to revert on FP2 to the RW config used for the rest of the weekend. As you said, influenced by the incoming weather.



And considering that our main challenger in Jeddah is Mercedes, I found this interesting photo from ChineseGP, to see a real side by side between MCL39 and W16. Hope this is not off topic.

Although this could be used to create a more outboard “virtual” upper pivot, or joint, I don’t expect this will change either camber gain or scrub characteristics. The latter are mostly influenced by roll center (or instant center) height and wishbone effective lengths.

I expect they used the separate link design to accommodate the somewhat extreme divergent angles of the fwd and aft arms.

On the front suspension—with steering involved—the virtual joint (lower in this case) may be useful in reducing steering loads and kickback:

Thank you for the explanation and thought on this.

I've example of this (in immediate family vehicles) with "virtual" in top location on 4WD chassis, coincidentally with 18 inch rim size too. Joint sitting above tire and external to rim, partly to achieve as you note with steering feel etc, also to reduce rim displacement within it's movement "sphere" which may be a consideration in this McL design given that wheel wake is such a dominant topic in general aero schema for these cars.
Notably effective in its ability to keep wheel "displacement" if that's the correct way of describing, within a smaller envelope/cross section.
