Windscreens? Hopefully it isn't just as simple as "they are banned' as that would make for a very boring topic but, How come we don't see them? The thought came to me when i started thinking of having a closed cockpit in F1, somewhat like what we would see in the Bentley speed 8 or future of LMP (aren't they moving to closed cockpits next season?) or possibly a cockpit like the OSS series?

Does that indicate this as a boring topic now? :?

-1 For closed-cockpits.

But they do have windscreens

However they are severely restricted in height and size.

Yes there is a windscreen and it's THE thing that brings Jenson bad luck.

But whats the purpose of that windscreen?
it seems like it is just producing drag

i'd like to see windscreens, well more like canopy in fact.

The F1 would look even more like fighter jets and simple canopy would be drag efficient.

Likely the opposite - an aerohead could probaly give you chapter and verse but I think it trips the airflow over the low pressure area created by the cockpit cavity - I could be talking utter nonsense of course as I'm still learning a lot about aero.

EDIT The top picture is a Brabham BT24 tested during Monza qualifying in 1967 by Jack Brabham. Was never used in a race as JB complained about vision distortion. The second car is a Protos F2 which was raced, but not a success, interestingly it was a monocoque chassis - made of wood.

It deflects the air preventing it from swirling into the cockpit which would be even worse on the aero.

(this is also probably why the drivers complain about the heat in Malaysia - even thought they're going fast - no air is getting in there)

Off Topic But - Another aero development just as interesting as a canopy... the full wheel fairing.

I wonder if that can be classified as a part of the brake cooling system
