f3 vortex generators

I was reading a excellent article from ss_collins regarding F3 chassis's. The article mentions sidepod vortex generators. What are vortex generators and I couldn't find it on the pictures they showed on the article. Does anybody know how they look?

If I'm not mistaken these are the most extreme ones ever seen in F1 before they were banned (but I might be completely wrong).

From Manchilds posted wikipedia article: "Air jet vortex generators work on a different principle. They direct a jet of air into the boundary layer, thereby re-energising it."
Has this something to do with Manchilds nosecone idea?
