rFactor players

Alright guys, I know many of you play rFactor. Well, so do I! A few days ago I was bored and though -- "why not make my own engine files to replicate certain
what-ifs". So, I did! I have created an engine mod folder for the BMW Sauber F1.07 that contains many F1 engines to try out to see what would happen if you did such a thing.
- *Standard 2.4 V8
*2008 3.0 V10 (if the V10s had continued to be used)
*1985 Renault 1.5 V6 Turbo
*3.0 V10 Turbo (just as a laugh -- 1850BHP+!)
With these engines you can see how much quicker a 2007 chassis could get around a track with different powerplants. Just as a little bit of extra info, the "2008" V10 revs to 21,500rpm and produces just over 1000BHP. The 1985 Turbo produces around 1,000BHP when on Boost-mapping 11 (quali trim) and the 3.0 V10 Turbo is just ridiculous -- I've had over 315mph around the Jacksonville Speedway!
So, try them out and see what you think. The 2008 V10 is the best engine I find -- it's got
just too much power for the grip level of the cars and you have to be careful out of low/medium speed corners.

If it was possible to get 2009 slicks involved, and possibly scale the car down by 5%

, then I would be all over it!

I had a look at the coding for the tyres but they are pretty complex. If I have the time, I'll definetely try and make a 2009 compound tyre (obviously it will be guess work).

Possible to simply use tyres from another mod, like F1 1979???
And is it possible to down scale the cars themselves?

Those tyres must be quite pre-historic. Better pick the champ car tyres, A1GP or something like that.

What you'd have to do is just use a Monza aero-setup. Also, the GP79 tyres are no where near as grippy as the slicks will be next year. I'll see what I can do (I can get the basic coefficients of grip easy enough but the slip angles and such like are a little perplexing -- I'm a thermo/fluid-dynamicist not a tyre engineer!).

Just an update -- the 2007 BMW tyres seem to be wrong. They have a stated coefficient of grip (long/lat) of 2.4 for the soft compound. That's what the slicks will have! Am I missing something here? I thought the current control tyres were below 2

Your probably right, but I guess what they've done is try to get the car as close to the real lap times as possible rather than real feel...
If you edit i'd sure use it, i think they are too grippy...
btw, i also tested the different engine configs and that 3ltr turbo is such a laugh lol, wheelspinning in 4/5gears haha. Feels like theres unlimited amounts of torque. As for the v6, i do like the feel of it... its a very driveable engine and generally quite nice. was nice just comparing them all

Don't confuse the coefficient of grip with the total amount of grip available. I am pretty sure that somewhere in the tyre files you can factor for the amount of rubber on the road (i.e. WIDTH).
I don't see why a coefficient of 2.4 is so far wrong BTW as this figure only applies to the grip of the compound in use

Sorry to be slightly off topic, but I was thinking about buying rFactor and wanted some opinion on how playable it is without pedals and a steering wheel.

Non really

Especially if you're going to use a keyboard. Perhaps somewhat playable with a joystik or a gamepad (with analogue sticks).

At home I dont have enough room for my wheel and pedals so I used analogue sticks and its quite alright though still not as playable than with a wheel. But then at home I really only play for a few laps or so, whilst at Uni i can play for ages...

forgotten how much i like rfactor
ever since i got my g25 wheel i had ditched it for lfs
but after a few hours faffing with new drivers and setup
rfactor is again properly playable

2.4 grip coefficient. Well, you must remember that those numbers are under optimum conditions. There are many variables reducing the coefficient of the tyre. Such as off-temperature, load sensitivity, pressure variations, etc. I do agree however, the grip from the tyres was fractionally high in the released BMW F1.07, but not hugely so.
rFactor is a great sim, it does have it's flaws, yes. Gamepad, Joystick or higher are required to fully enjoy it though.
Just you wait for CTDP's 06 mod for rFactor
