F1 Testing outside of F1

Peugeot and Ferrari to cooperate on KERS. Peugeot gets an F1-grade KERS system, Ferrari gets in-season testing of their KERS (as banned for '09). No doubt the start of a trend.

I don´t see anything wrong in that. Using sinergies to take advantage is a clever thing that F1 should have started using years ago. Colin Chapman once said: "Rules are for the interpretation of wisemen and the obedience of fools". I agree with him

I have my doubts that F1 and LeMans share a lot of specs. When I last read about this they said it is radically different for each formula in motor sport. Some basics may be simillar but at the sharp end they will have to do the job 100% without the option of cutting corners.

LMP and F1 share the same techniques, only LMP has more possibilities in body changes and a new car can make an enormous gap. From what i read, Audi will already launch a new car in le mans next year, that will make a huge gap as a sportscar is harder to modify, a new rear end means a whole new rear body to cope with this.
Anyway, i think the le mans series are more of a technical highlight then F1, sportscars allow much more possibilities and a small change can have huge differences.

exactly, i'm sure we'll see alot of A1GP KERS cars testing at fiorano in the coming months.

Ferrari sources say that rumours linking the company's development of KERS with the Peugeot sportscar team are not to be taken seriously. The stories, which seem to have begun in the United States, suggest that Peugeot will run the Ferrari F1 KERS system on a 908 development car. The suggestion is that this would circumvent the F1 testing ban, which comes into effect at the first race in March.
This does not seem very logical. There are lots of links between the engine men in Maranello and Peugeot, given that a number of key players followed Jean Todt to Italy back in the 1990s, but from a political point of view it makes no sense at all for Ferrari to try to get around a rule that was agreed by the Formula One Teams' Association (FOTA), which is led by Ferrari boss Luca di Montezemolo.

Let me quote Chapman again: "Rules are for the interpretation of wisemen and the obedience of fools". Montezemolo would be the machiavellic wisemen here, playing the "no testing good samaritan" while developing KERS elsewhere, but I don´t think the other teams are fool at all

Renault have GP2 , WFR, or they can do this on Nissan. Toyota have Formula Nipon, Super GT & S-Taikyu. Williams have F2, BMW still got F.BMW, if Honda designed to rejoin F1 in future, they can test KERS on IRL!
and than, the KERS makers can be provide their system to other races like Superleague, Formula Master...etc or some tuned car races like Speed World Challenge & Nurburing 24hr........

on a similar note, suppose an F1 team gives a 40% scale model to a University to do some wind tunnel tests. Will this count towards the teams wind-tunnel time 'quota'? how would the FIA enforce this?

that is a good question, would they count it as part of the 'quota?'
I wouldn't mind this at all, if my University was handed a scale model, I would sink my teeth right into it, I probably wouldn't leave the wind-tunnel for a good 2 days
